What was I thinking?
When I agreed to join a basketball league this winter?!?!?!!? First game is tonight at 9:30. I'm going to be one sore distance runner tomorrow.
Hitting threes is like riding a bike, right?

If your shot is not falling, passing it off is not the cure. 100% of the shots not taken don't go in. CHUCK IT UP THERE!

C'mon, drive it to the hoop like Da Rose. Enjoy the contact. You were a football player once, right?
Just don't go all Rick Barry with the free throws!

Its my first night on the team, so I can't go completely ballistic on the shot attempts. Unless I'm on fire; then all bets are off.

We play with only 6, so I expect the second half to be my time to shine. And I've been eyeing a pair of Rose's shoes.

I just read about some research that shows there is no such thing as a "hot hand" or "cold hand". They analyzed thousands of shots taken by players in the NBA. There was no correlation between the shots taken. For example, if a player made three shots in a row he was not more likely to make his fourth shot.
So yea, if you've got the shot, CHUCK IT.

Dude. You're seriously gonna ball and risk losing training time? You know you're one step away from an ankle or knee injury that can cost you weeks... and it doesn't even have to be your step; could be someone else's step. I remember discussing this once on Hal's site some years back...

Actually they say it helps develop muscle groups that you don't employ for running which can help strengthen the core and some opposing muscles. Just be careful and if you have any weak ankles or knees wear some compression wraps or something. Sore isn't necessarily bad as long as it doesn't linger.

So how many bricks are going to toss up tonight? Hey at least the Bulls looked good against PHX tonight. Hey did you catch any of that Michigan Michigan State game? Good game!

I was thinking the same thing - I remember a statistic somewhere that bball was the leader in sports injuries (not that I'm one to talk...) - sounds like fun but be careful...Mr MattM wrote:Dude. I hear ya, and if I get hurt, I am not allowed to complain one bit.
To explain my thinking: I have just 10 days of base-building left. After that, I transition to 7 weeks of reduced mileage and speed work. I think basketball fits into that phase nicely. I think I've become a little too one dimensional in my fitness and that balllin' can help return some explosiveness. I played through law school (probably when it was discussed on Hal's boards) and I think its a fantastic workout.

We only had 5 last night, so I played the entire 40 minutes. I'm a little sore in different places this morning - ankles, hips, groin - from the lateral movement. In my mind that reaffirms that this will be a good thing.

My shot was on: 7-15, 3-6 from 3 point range, for 17 points. Couple steals, a blocked shot. My ball handling was really the only aspect that was truly rusty. We won by about 20 and I'm already excited for next week! Speaking of, I need new shoes...

Re: What was I thinking?
Sounds reasonable, Dave. I didn't post it in my original reply, but I was also thinking that another benefit to hoops is simply adding some balance to your life. Running isn't everything; we aren't using it to pay the bills! Good shooting... does your team have a big man to post up?

Re: What was I thinking?
Hmm, your team won by 20 and you only scored 17 points. It sounds like your team would be fine with only 5 members.
Please post pics of the new running, er, I mean BB shoes.

I actually assumed my old BB shoes would be fine, but it was apparent last night the grip is shot.

That it true. From April through October I have softball on Wednesdays as a nice break from the monotony of running. Basketball will serve the same purpose.
No big man. We're all between 6' and 6' 4", and a true run and gun team. Plays to my advantage.

Hey now! We all scored about 15.
Re: What was I thinking?
I play tennis for some of the same reasons (a bit short for Bball), but I think it helps my lateral movement and my "speed" and recovery ratios. I can get to way more balls than my opponents in most cases, but I'm still picking up and running faster than I would in any race.
Do watch for ankle and knee injuries though. Some of my previous injuries that affected my running were as a result of tennis.

Re: What was I thinking?
I gave up ice hockey 10 days before my first serious race, when I got taken down twice and ended up with a dark black bruise that went from the small of my back to the inside of my right knee. My right butt cheek was swollen to twice its normal size. On the bright side, I scored in my last moment on the ice -- I got tripped as I shot, and flying (remember the Bobby Orr poster, old folks?) through the air simultaneously watched the puck go into the net, and thought "this is REALLY going to hurt."
I recovered in time for the race, but realized I needed to choose at that point. The pads haven't left the basement in the 13 years since; I do miss it sometimes.

Maybe something like this, Dave-O? I hear Nike and Air Jordan are teaming up for a shoe this year.
