Ultra Training Schedules Empty Ultra Training Schedules

Ok, having done one ultra now (50K) without really any specific training (crazy eh?) ... I'm looking for some ultra training schedules. I know I can use a marathon schedule but continue to extend the long runs ... just wondering if you all have any suggestions of schedules to look at to help inform my training.

http://www.scrunners.org/ultrasch.php this is what I followed for my 50K and I felt well-prepared for it, except for the fueling which I need to work on for all my future marathons and ultras....but I think that's a good solid training program. Have fun!!

Really depends on the type of ultra you're going for and what your goals are. For a 50k, you could run it on a marathon plan. For a 50-miler, back-to-back long runs become somewhat important - you want at least 1-2 weekends of long Sat, long Sun per month. For a 100-miler, time on feet is way more important than actual moving speed, but you'll also want to practice your walk/run strategy.

EDIT: To expand on that, for anything more than a 50k, I'd recommend a schedule with Monday and Friday off (maybe some core work, as that becomes more important the longer you're going), Sat/Sun as your long runs (build up to splitting the goal mileage over the two days for your peak), and Tues-Thurs as midweek runs with Wednesday being a "purpose" run and Tues/Thurs just being easy hour-long outings.

And not that I'm qualified to really advise here, but I have read Relentless Forward Progress (on ultra training) and it has practical advice and training programs but make sure you're running on some of the same surface your ultra will be on, too (trail or road or whatever).

Yes, that's a great book for tons of info. Plus it will get you pumped up for ultra running! Reina - what distance/type of ultra are you targeting? or just ultra info in general? I agree w/ Mike about training for 50K you can easily do w/ marathon training - just increase the LR miles (i.e. 18 becomes a 22, 20 becomes a 25 or 27ish). Ideally, you should do some LRs on the type of terrain you'll be racing, but it's not absolutely necessary (I ran Ice Age 50k, did quite well, and had never run on trails). For a 50, B2B runs can be good for some runners, but not a must. For my 50 in November I never did B2Bs - I did Lrs of 25, 25, 30, 36.5 The 36.5 was a really confidence booster during the race. Currently I'm training for Ice Age 50 Mile and adding in some B2Bs. So far I've done 25/15, 21/20 and yesterday I did a 30 miler. I'll do at least one more 30 and then a 32 - 36 on the actual trail 6 weeks out (I'm running Boston and Big Sur Marathons 4 weeks and 2 weeks before Ice Age as well). Also a good idea to add in a core stability/strengthening program at least twice a week. I'm no expert, but this is what's worked for me so far.

Thanks for the info all!

I haven't exactly figured out what I'm training for next. The 50K I just did was a road race, one of the only ultras I have seen that isn't a trail run. So, I'm thinking that I need to do some trail running, and my next race won't be an ultra, but a longish trail run (30k, 20 mile something like that). Then I'll plan a 50K trail run. I'm just looking for resources to inform my journey!

Since you're local... My Sacramento-Valley-Ultra Training Plan: drive to Auburn. Run on trails until you can't run anymore. Drive home. Sleep. Repeat.
