So I think I have an outside shot at breaking 3 hours this year at Boston, but as we all know disaster can strike at any moment; injury, headwinds, lousy weather, taking it out a bit too fast........

If it doesn't go as planned in April, how long until I can make another serious effort and take advantage of being in terrific shape and are there any suggestions where to go? Would love a good net downhill run i.e. Utah, Colorado or the sort. Not particularly keen on running in July or August due to the heat.

Any advice?

Cleveland in mid-May. Seriously, the course is flat as compared to Boston and you can drive there.

Why wait for so long? You rest two weeks, then Jerry is going to pace you a sub 3 in Eugene, April 29th.

Now that would be fun, just don't know if two weeks is enough recovery time. But really now, who's pacing who?

Jerry for the first half, Chicharito the 2nd. They can switch if you prefer.

I think he meant that he would be pacing Chicharito.

Traverse City and Grandma's are two possibilities. Grandma's has been hot lately, however.

It's those damn southerly winds that make Grandma's warm. If you can get a wind off of the lake, it is a much more enjoyable event.

If you go all out at Boston, I wouldn't do another all out attempt for a couple of months. I've tried a couple of times to bounce right back with another marathon after a hard effort and they've never gone all that well. There's a reason the elites typically can only run 2-3 a year really well. If they could do 1 a month as max efforts and rake in prize money doing it, they would. But.......if you realize at some point during Boston or even before the start if it is a bad weather day that it is not the right day for the "all out" and back off sufficiently and don't empty yourself in the final 10k, there's no reason you couldn't bounce back for a May raced attempt.

Bayshore May 26th seems like the obvious answer to me. I haven't run it but I've heard a lot of good things about it. You'll have to go North if you want recovery and a relatively good chance at good weather. Oops, i guess it's closed. nevermind.

It all depends on what happens in Boston -

If you go alll out, finish, and come up a few minutes short, I wouldn't race again until the fall. Its just too risky and the odds of bettering your time without another training cycle are slim.

If you realize sometime early or mid-race that Boston isn't going well (weather, other factors, etc) and shut it down early, then I would target a mid-May marathon.

Grandma's 2011 was absolutely ideal. Cool, with cloud-cover and that sweet tailwind off the lake that Nick is talking about!
