And more on health/cholesterol/statinsn
So back in CHI 2010, we had a discussion of treating high cholesterol, and if statins are good or bad. This just came out the other day:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/melaniehaiken/2012/02/29/the-latest-statin-scare-are-you-at-risk/
The FDA just began requiring black box warnings on statins, and some have argued for quite some time the diabetes issue far outweigh the benefits. So increased risk of diabetes, memory loss, muscle damage and potentially impotence (http://fampra.oxfordjournals.org/content/19/1/95.long) . Hmmmm. And of course does big pharma have a vested interest in touting the benefits of these drugs?
Once again, I know only what I hear from my pops and while unconventional at times, he does have some credibility. I'm hoping I can get him to share his comments as he is far more eloquent than I on these subjects.

You are right on with regards to the cholesterol thing. My cholesterol measures in at around 230 combined, so most doctors think I'm going to die tomorrow or I need to take medication. The thing is that when you look at the ratio, you will see that my good cholesterol (HDL) is very high - off the charts high, and my bad cholesterol is normal low. So the real question is - is this good or bad? My cardiologist friend tells me not to worry as my good cholesterol will act like a roto-rooter in those arteries, but it just shows you that you can not go off numbers alone.

That's the exact argument Dr. Jack made at dinner in Chicago 2010. Ratio of good:bad is much more important than the overall number. Makes perfect sense to me!

My husband has high cholesterol but he had some specialized tests done that broke things down even further and showed the bad cholesterol that was high for him wasn't "bad" in the way that causes concern. Something about sizes of the molecules or something. I really can't remember. Anyway, his Dr apparently likes to check that, since some high cholesterol numbers are worse than others, even when it is the "bad" cholesterol that is high. I found it interesting since other Doctors might have just put him on statins without any second thought.

I believe the size of the molecules have to do with whether a person is Pattern A or Pattern B. One is genetic and one is not.
