Re: Charles Keeps Going

Post  charles.moman on Sat Jun 30, 2012 2:54 pm

Ended up the week with 44 miles. I shifted my schedule around because of the heat and obligations. I did not get in a 7 mile run yesterday, otherwise I would have had 51 miles. I ran just under 200 miles for the month - my most ever. Next week is another 51-mile week and I should be able to get it all in by starting very early each morning.

The next three weeks I will get to some some of my "west coast" kids - Daniel, Becky, Sarah and John Mark.
Daniel (former Marine) and his wife, Emily are flying on Sunday night from Spokane and staying until Saturday.
Becky is flying in on Friday from Estes Park, CO. and staying for 4-5 days I think.
And Sarah and Rob will be coming in next week from Encinitas, California and staying for a week.
And then John Mark and Kat are getting back to Indiana around July 12, from Twenty Nine Palms, CA where he was stationed. He finishes on July 7 and they are moving to nearby Columbus.
Most of them have not been home since my Mom's death 2 years ago. Her house, next door, is empty so the couples will use it when they are here. We hope to find the perfect renter this fall.

Under 40 miles this week.
I was supposed to do 18 on Friday, but even though I started very early - by mile 14.5 it was just too hot.
I had 10 on the schedule today, but I was tired and it was again going to be too hot.
Looks much better for next week.
48 days until my 50 miler. Embarassed

I'm glad this last week of weather is behind us.

How many loops are you planning on (weather permitting) for the Howl?

My schedule calls for 18 miles for the long run that week.
Susie cannot come with me - she has to work at the library that weekend.
On the Kennekuk Runners Facebook page, I posted my videos and also said I would have ice water around noon for people to dunk their hats or bandanas. I also will have a sprayer to mist folks that want it.
I want to start that around noon, so . . . . I may just do 3 - 5 loops.
I will probably do my 18 miler on Thursday that week.

Susie is swapping with someone so she can come to my 50 miler in late August.
I will not be interested in driving home after that! pale

Is it still okay for Kathy and I to join you under your tent? Kathy's not running so she would probably enjoy the runners stopping by for misting and ice. Your call. I'll probably do either 6 or 7 loops depending upon weather.

Sure, no problem at all.
I may have another runner or two at my canopy too from a Runners World forum.
The more, the better!

Re: Charles Keeps Going

If Kathy is willing to help, then I may run 5 or 6 loops. That is my first week of school - opening day for Canaan Charter School is on Wednesday - my day to teach, but there will be too much hoopla that day. So I will teach on Thursday instead. Then I will head to Danville Friday around noon to set up the canopy and my tent. I will probably jog at least one loop that night.

Training.
Well, I looked at the high temps this coming week and decided to move my 50k to yesterday. I got to the refuge at 5:15 AM to find the gate already open, so I headed out. I got one 7.5 loop in, got back to the car and then it began thundering and lightning. I decided the odds were I would not get hit Shocked , so out I went. Soon it was a deluge and I got beat up with heavy rain for 3/4 mile. It then slowed down and I was running in a nice light rain until mile 25.
At that point I stopped my Garmin and reset. I hit my 25 mile goal - anything under 6 hours - and then did 2.5 miles back to the car. The sun came out with a vengeance and I was baking. I decided to call it a day when I got back to the car. If it had continued to rain, I would have gone on to the 31 mile mark.

I feel fine today, just a little tired - nice 2-hour nap after church!
At North Country I hope to finish the first 25-mile loop in 5:30 - 5:45, in order to give myself some leeway for the 2nd time around. No running tomorrow - maybe an hour walk and then back to my schedule.

A little behind on reporting, but I am sure no one has been holding their breath! Embarassed
Last week I had runs of 6, 4, 6 & 27.37. I was supposed to do my 50k this week, but moved it to last week because I was worried about the high temps this week.

The 50k turned into 27.37. I got to the refuge at 5:15 AM and got started. I ran my normal 7 mile route and came back to the car to eat something. As I was about to head out, there was a lot of thunder and lightning . . . but I went out anyway. I got drowned for about a mile and then just a light steady rain for the next 4 hours or so. At mile 25 the rain stopped and the sun began blazing. I had almost 3 miles to get back to the car and then called it a day. It was crazy hot, but I am pleased with what I did.

That 27 took a lot out of me and I really felt it this week. I took Monday off and then 9, 7 and 10.75. I could do 5 today, but I am skipping it. Next week is another light week and then I have a 25 mile run on 8/3 and mercifully I begin a slow taper up until 8/25. I will hit 900 miles for the year just before my 50-miler.

Pulling up at 27 miles sounds like a smart move. It's crazy how, after running through a monsoon, conditions got worse when the rain stopped.

It sounds like you've done a great job preparing for the 50-miler. Here's hoping you get better weather for it!

Charles, when you are setting up at Howl, save me a spot and I will set up my canopy next to you. I will shoot to be over there no later than 4:00 p.m.

Looks like your training is going well. Looking forward to seeing you in a couple weeks.

Re: Charles Keeps Going

Post  charles.moman on Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:36 pm

Last week I was at ISU for a Lilly Fellows summer workshop for 3 days.
I only ran one day while there, but ended up the week with 33 miles.
This week will be my last 50-mile week in this training cycle.
After this week, my mileage drops, as the 3 week taper starts.

On Friday I will do a 25-mile run - some on the dirt roads of the refuge and the majority on the short trails there.
The North Country Ultra is 3 weeks from this Saturday - August 25 - we will drive up on Friday - 7.5 hour trip from southern Indiana.

I cannot assume that I will make it, but I am trained up and confident that I will be able to complete the 50 miles. You just never know what can happen with a race this long.

Charles, I am confident you will complete the 50 miler. If I can do it, you can do it. Just remember 50's are all about fueling and hydration.

Looks like the weather will be as near perfect as one can hope for this time of year, Charles!! Yes, Kathy would be more than willing to help out as she has asked me several times what she can do when she's there waiting. Perfect.

Yippee!!

Dot and I had a fun time running 5 loops together - really made the time go fast and we worked well together.
I did a short video interview with Dot and I will post that this week.
The Howl went well and during Friday and Saturday I got almost 20 miles.
This week I am down to only 27 miles and then next week only 9 before North Country.

I am making lists and checking my plans for North Country.
I am getting a little nervous about it, but I feel prepared and I am just wanting to get to it!

Re: Charles Keeps Going

Post  charles.moman on Mon Aug 20, 2012 7:00 am

Last week I only had 25 miles to run.
This week I will do 4 today, 3 Wednesday and when I get to Manistee, MI, I will do a short 2-miler on the trail so I can at least see the start. We plan on leaving for Michigan at 6:00 AM on Friday - get there by mid-afternoon, check into our cabin, check in at the race and get a quick supper and off to bed early.

Of course, the weather forecast keeps changing. Lately it had been saying low 70's and no rain.
Today it says high of 86 and 20% chance of rain. Then after Saturday highs n the low to mid 70s.
I am praying that the cold front comes early on Saturday.
At least I will be in the shade about 90% of the time.
I have run in some heat this summer, so it will not kill me and I know how I can handle it.
The finish line in under 14 hours is my goal. Exclamation
