What's your favorite workout (or type of workout)? And why?

Could be Yasso 800s, 4-6 mi tempos, a fartlek, etc. Heck, doesn't even have to be running-related. And why do you like this workout? Does it play to your strengths? Challenge your weaknesses?

I've always enjoyed the revolving ladder on the TM... an 8 miler in 1/4 mile increments it looks like this:

Mile - Speed
1 - 7.0, 7.2, 7.4, 7.6
2 - 7.2, 7.4, 7.6, 7.8
3 - 7.4, 7.6, 7.8, 8.0
4 - 7.6, 7.8, 8.0, 8.2
5 - 7.8, 8.0, 8.2, 8.4
6 - 8.0, 8.2, 8.4, 8.6
7 - 8.2, 8.4, 8.6, 8.8
8 - 8.4, 8.6, 8.8, 9.0

FCR 4 miles@6:00 pace.

The purpose is to hit the splits right on and learn to run hard, but relaxed.

Jerry's FCR is my current 4mi goal pace. Sad

Hal-style tempos. I need a bit of time to ease into the hard stuff, and this is a good way for me to do it. I add on 5-10min at MP at the end for stamina.

I, too, love tempo runs or speedwork. But I must say, I most enjoy the days when I run for an hour without a "purpose". That 7 miles is often the best time I have that day.

Full disclosure, I do this as my LT and couldn't hold that long most of the time though, 1-2 times last marathon training. Very Happy

Great question - absolute favorite workout is a brick consisting of a 1.2 mile open water swim sans wetsuit, 25 miles hard cycling, and 4-6 miles hard run. Overall time is sort of irrelevant compared to effort, but I love the afterglow...

I like races, but do not like training; probably why I run so many races. I guess races, because I run so many (@<100%), they become like training.

I like them all but if I must pick my most favorite... I think it would be the long trail runs with friends. 6 hours? Do you consider that a workout or party?

oh I love shit like that. as for my favorite - I'll get back to you tomorrow post sleeping pill and post 30+ miles of trail running with a group on Ice Age Trail in WI.

Hmm, I must be a masochist because I like starting at 7 and going 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4......9.7, 9.8, 9.9, 10 every minute or two for a quick 30-60 minute workout.



My favorite workout, however, comes at the end of a fall marathon cycle when the cool weather arrives, the leaves are changing and I can run 12 miles at MP+30 and then hit 5-6 miles at HMP without any effort because I have already acclimated to running in the heat and humidity. Added bonus: no need to carry fluid because of the cooler temps. I feel like I'm flying!

I did this today over 8 miles. I warmed up with a mile or two and then did a Hal style tempo in the middle and ended it with a mile or so at marathon pace. Then walked just a bit to cool down. It was a really good run!

My answer is the same as Gobbles. I like doing workouts in races. Tempos in 5K and 10K races. Goal MP runs in half marathons. I like doing less than maximum efforts but still decently hard workouts in races often. If I have to pick a favorite workout done outside of a race, it is a full set of 10 x 800 Yassos.

This cycle it all depends on the day. I always love Long Runs but mid week runs I would say GA runs probably because they are hard enough to make it a strong work out but not taxing enough to wipe me out.

Well since I specified workout I'll say a 4-6 mile tempo thrown in the middle of a 10-12 mile run. I actually hate this run mid-way through the tempo portion (and I define tempo as assumed half-marathon pace) as I typically worry I won't be able to finish it. However, more often than not I am able to complete the run and I feel a great sense of accomplishment. During the warm-down part of the run I feel really good about my fitness and start plotting the next week or two worth of runs.

Fartleks can be fun too. Because like others have said you feel a sense of accomplishment without killing yourself.

Screw 5k pace intervals or faster. Those suck. (But unfortunately are necessary)

Long runs are great too...but unless run on trails I typically get quite bored the last handful of miles and just want the run to be over with. I think I need to mix up my long run routes more.

Mile repeats are my favorite workout. There's just something so simplistic about "run a really hard mile, rest, run a really hard mile, rest, run a really hard mile." Doing 3 x 1 mile at sub-5k pace at the end of a training cycle, when I'm fit and partially tapered, is the best.
