Taper Question Empty Taper Question

Post  mountandog Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:04 pm

Don't think I've done too much damage to my training but............looking for opinions.

I've been on the Pfitz 24wk/70mile plan, so I've been at this a while. Am probably about 90 miles short to the whole 24 week plan (travel, tendonitis, etc., occassionaly got in the way) Hurry up Boston while I still have a semblence of motivation, a 24 week plan is a long time.

The last couple of weeks were supposed to have totalled 70 and 64 miles. I actually ran 58 and 54 primarily due to races (a half marathon and a recovery day instead of a 20 miler two weeks ago, and a 5 mile race instead of a 10 mile race run last week). This is week one of the taper and it calls for 58 miles -- essentially the same that I have actually run the past couple of weeks -- ha. Some taper, eh. Might end up being kind of a weird 5 week taper. 46 is planned next week, then 30 the week before Boston.

So - should I run the 58 this week or cut back a bit on the mileage to start a taper, keeping the same quality for tempos, MP, etc or run it as planned?

I would say continue on with the 58 that are on the schedule. When you do start tapering down, I would recommend to continue to run with the same intensity as during your training cycle.

I use a 2-2.5 wk taper and I think you are fine running 55-58 miles this week and then tapering to Boston.

I like 2 week tapers and with Boston being on a Monday and me always doing Monday-Sunday weeks, it is really a 15 day taper I do. I would keep the mileage at 55-60 this week and start the cut in mileage on Monday, April 2.

I say go with the plan esp. since it's on Monday -
I'm doing 70 this week, 50ish next week, 30ish week of race. I'm already having trouble cutting the miles! lol

Stick with the program. If anything, because of your reduction the last two weeks, you don't need as sharp of a taper.
