A Very Fluid Situation Empty A Very Fluid Situation

Post  Martin VW Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:04 pm

This morning's announcement that 2012 qualified runners can defer their registration throws a new wrinkle into the 2013 registration process.

I only mention it now because some people are making their race decision based on whether they have a qualifying time for 2013 or not, and now, that thought process may be different. If 5,000 people defer, it reduces the number of slots availabe next year from 21,000 to 16,000.

All of a sudden, BQ - 5 becomes important again.

Martin:
I thought the same thing.
Glad I have a -19 and a -13 for next year, if I want to run.
That said I'm not planning a marathon next year, but that could change.

Still, it is a possible concern for those chasing Boston next year.

They ought to let those of us who have failed to qualify run in place of the deferrals. I'd drive up Monday, pay the fee and run a slow 26.2 just to get it off my list!

Hm, not a bad idea... sort of like the professional seat-fillers at the Oscars for when the stars and starlets go to the head? Very Happy

Well that's just great... That makes a potential 10 (actually 10:59) minute drop in the last couple of years for a BQ. Grrrrr. Oh well, it will just make it all the more sweeter if I (we) ever make it!

I talked to a BAA guy at the expo - they are doing this to discourage runners from running the race. The less people running, the less at risk for heat related illness. I can't tell if they're being overly cautious, but I know they don't want another Chicago 2007 on their hands.
I'm still running, but slower. I'll take walk breaks if need be.

My first thought was also as to the affect this has on next year's race. Certainly it limits the available slots. I understand why the BAA made this decision, expecially having witnessed the carnage of Chicago 2007 first hand, but it probably wasn't an easy one.

Please everyone be careful out there.

Just talked to my coach who felt that I have nothing to lose by running since I have a -14 time for next year. My plan is to go out at training pace - which is now around 9 min miles, and walk through all the water spots getting in water and Gatorade. If all goes according to plan I hope to be able to bring the running pace down a bit, but if not I'll be happy with a 4 -4:15 effort

Next month I make my BQ attempt and if I get it it'll likely be by a hair. That would kind of be a bummer if I didn't get in. Of course first things first I actually need to qualify next month.

I have a BQ-5 for next year so hope that is enough then. Funny, the thought of fewer getting in next year was also the first thought I had.

We'll see how many defer. If I had spent money on plane fare and booked a hotel, I'd run. Not to mention trained. If I were local, I might defer.
