Ok, tough race today, and the medical stats are starting to come in.

Rumor also has it that this race hand more than 500 DNFs (local news).

I would think 500 DNF's would be light.

Separately & below the end of the story was a link to a story named "Vt. governor chased by 4 bears in backyard." Guess the governor should've knocked.

Everyone in our group (~15) made it across the finish line. All unanimously decide it was the hardest marathon we had all run.

I didn't head to the gathering post-race (seriously was not in any mindset to be around people), but yep, I'll second that sentiment. Hardest run I've done. Period.

I would think that there was a lot more than 500 DNFers...

I am impressed with each and every one of our runners...

Actually, 4300 did not start, but of those slightly less than 500 picked up their packets. You had to pick up your packet to defer. The rest will be considered the standard 'no-show' DNSers.

A few interesting quotes from this article.
a)
Article wrote:
Matt Manning finished the race in 2 hours and 34 minutes — a full 10 minutes slower than his pace last year. He said the heat set in after the first several miles.
Looks like Matt got faster, and moved! Or has been fooling us all these years.

b) About the 4,300 who decided not to run, I heard that only 421 of those are actual deferrals to next year in that they picked up their packet and didn't run. So that should be the number that go into next year. If you consider that what 75% of registered actually run, that brings the number down to 300. Then not all people may be able to afford a trip again next year, so I doubt the impact of the decision is more than 200-300 additional registrations for next year. It won't affect the selections it seems.

Interesting, many sight are claiming 4,278 deferrals, but it doesn't add up, it it looks like ~440 total deferrals.

Who is eligible for a deferral?
The only runners who will be eligible to defer are those who:

1. Picked up their bibs for the 2012 race -- or "virtually" picked them up, meaning they contacted the B.A.A. personally to have their bibs set aside for them;
and
2. Did not start the race.

According to Davis, 427 runners meet those two criteria.

Deferments rarely affect anything as most people don't defer and out of those who do most don't show. That is why many races offer deferments and in most cases charge a fee! I'd be willing to bet our of those maybe 200 might show up and that would be high only because it is Boston!
