marathon decisions.

Post  Lauren on Tue May 01, 2012 1:14 pm

I'm terrible at even deciding whether I want breakfast or lunch at most restaurants. So I have no idea what to do for my next full. Wanted to see if my fellow marathon friends had any input on a marathon around jan/feb.

So far the top few contenders are Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham (a 2-lap course but apparently fast), Charleston, and Houston. Has anyone raced these? Or have other ideas for a winter race? I'm looking for a 'fast' course, not huge crowds, and preferably one that has NO CHANCE OF BEING 90 degrees. Smile

Lauren,

I have heard great things about the Mississippi Blues Marathon in that time window. I hope East TN is treating you well.

You also cannot go wrong with Houston.

Houston is nice. Flat, easy logistics, well organized. It won't be 90 degrees, but it might be hot and humid, I won't lie! It could be in the seventies/ low eighties.

I have friends who have run Houston and says it's very good. I ran Cowtown in Ft Worth (Feb) and it was a very hot day but this yr was very nice. I liked Pensacola Marathon (in Feb), too, but (personal rant) if you win an age group award pick it up there because they sure won't send it later...Mobile, AL has a marathon in January that is on my list.

I've run Houston 6 times and hosted the 365Runners (or V-Team) Saturday lunch at a local restaurant 3 times. It's mostly flat (miles 8 -18 are F-L-A-T), but coming from Tennessee, it's flat to you. You get a hot meal after the race, pre and post race relaxing is inside, the finisher's shirt doesn't cost you, there are 24,000 half and full runners. I keep coming back to it, since I live here.

The weather can be anywhere from 25-55 degrees at gun time, but mostly it's seasonal with a temp at gun time of 43 degrees. Lottery registration starts June 6, I think. I would reserve a room before registering for the lottery. PM me with any questions.

Other good sized races in Texas in February is Livestrong in Austin or Cowtown in Fort Worth, but they're not flat. Rock 'n Roll Mardi Gras in New Orleans is sometimes in February. Flat terrain, but you have to watch the potholes. And you have to get shuttled back to the convention center, when you finish.

And Jerry has threatened to come 5 times that I know of, but has shown up only 3 times. Razz

Another runner who has run Houston. I have done the 1/2 marathon 3 times and the full 1 time. The early registration information is below, if you do not qualify for early registration you will have to enter the lottery which starts June 6th. Also, coming from Tennessee it will be flat and fast for you. They are getting better with the start line logistics, they had 3 waves this past year for the full. The temps are usually good but last year it was low/mid 60s with 90% humidity but the previous 3 yrs have been anywhere from 40-55 with north winds. They do a great job with the race day logistics and are getting better every year.

May 8 – May 31, 2012 (11:59 p.m. CT): Early Race Registration

Early race registration is open to the following eligible runners to receive a guaranteed race entry:

1. Time Qualifiers:

Runners must meet the following time qualification standards. Finisher times may date back to January 1, 2011. Qualifying races must be a USATF or AIMS certified course and provide online race results.

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions all. Sounds like Houston would be a good one and I'd be able to do the early registration. Leaning a little more towards this..

However, I did notice that Mississippi Blues gives you a harmonica. Love it. Very Happy

I ran the Houston half and I really loved it. As for Mercedes - not so sure who told you it was fast, but then again, those of us running the hills in No. GA and East TN would think so.

Rocket City in early December is flat and fast, but might be too early. Mississippi Blues is supposed to be a good one, but absolutely no guarantee on the weather there as the last couple of years it was either real hot or real cold despite its time frame.
