@Julie wrote:Sounds like everything is going well. I hear you on the dark for running although we don't have quite that much wildlife in the city. I hope things cool down for a great marathon for all of you!
Thanks Julie. THe weird thing is that I live in a huge metropolitan area and a fairly large suburb. I guess it's just a very residential area with a number of trees/streams/wooded areas that is conducive to the critters being around.

Friday - I did the five easy miles

SUnday - one rest day and the last long run. The plan said 12 miles, 4 warm up, then two sets of three miles (MP, MP-15, HMP). So I did that roughly averaging 9:00 for the warm up, then (8:00, 7:45, 7:30) then a couple warm down miles.

Monday - just got back from a six miler, about 9:00 pace. I tried to go at recovery, about 9:30-9:45 but couldn't. I think the legs are feeling better and this last week of taper should do the job.

Not to fuel your taper madness about the weather, but what about Columbus as an alternative? I can't remember if you considered that one. It is usually a week after Chicago, not great in terms of timing unless you completely blow off Chicago. But it is close and fast.

Good luck with whichever race you decide to run, John. The humidity is not too bad in Chicago, but I understand the need to consider a change in venue.

Thank you all for the comments and warm (pun intended) thoughts. To say I am torn is an understatement. 4.5 months of training, early mornings, etc., all comes down to a pretty warm day it looks like. If this was Boston or some destination marathon, I would just alter my goal without even thinking about it. But since it's my hometown and there are several other marathons close by next weekend, I will probably wait till Friday/Saturday to decide what to do - either run Chicago with a 3:35 goal instead of 3:30, or go for Grand Rapids or Columbus the following weekend. It didn't help to go out at lunch and have the car say it was 80 degrees, though I think it wasn't really that warm.

John, I understand your dilemma, but you did fairly well last year in Chicago didn't you? I think it's still going to be 10 degrees cooler when you finish than it was last year with very little humidity to speak of. It may cost us all a bit of time, but I think it'll be pretty decent for the most part. Smart hydration and even pacing should prevent any major blow ups since it's not going to be "that" hot.

Jim, I did a 3:45 last year, I keep meaning to go look up my race report on the other site to see how I felt then.

Thanks Jerry, Jim, Julie and John (wow, 5 'J's responded)

Catching up on training:

Mon - 6 miles easy
Tue - 7 miles with 4 at pace
Wed - 6 miles easy/recovery
Thu - 5 miles easy

Thanks Dave, Michele. I have decided to do Grand Rapids. Still plan to go down to Chicago tomorrow and do a 12 mile long run run starting with the marathon runners but then break off about mile 12. This will repeat last week's long run, then another week of taper. Lot of thinking this through but this seems to be the best decision for me, of course it could backfire too. Se la vie.

Well John I support your decision 100%. You and only you alone knows what you will feel comfortable with. And if the choice is that you want to have a better shot at your PR then you have to make the choice that feels right for you and what gives you the best confidence. Good for you on making a tough choice on what to do. I hope that you it all works out for you in the end. Now just run your butt off for 12 miles. Smile

I totally get it, John, and right now, the weather looks perfect for next Sunday in GR. I'm racing the half, but we will have to meet up. My friend, Judy, whom I first met on Hal's original V-board is running her 50th state and many of us who met online originally will be there. If you PM me with your info, I can make sure to let you know our post race plans.

Julie, I hope so too. Most likely, no matter what the weather, I will do that race just to be done with it.

Thanks Kenny, I would have really suffered out there had I kept going.

So on Saturday, after checking the forecast yet again, I realized it wouldn't be a whole lot different than last year. I found my race report from last year's Chicago and it wasn't pretty. So after checking the 7 day forecast for GR (I know it's not totally reliable), it became sort of an easy decision to switch. Problem now will be finding a hotel at late notice. In order to make my decision final and because I had tapered last week, I went out and did 10 miles on Saturday.

Summary1:28:069.9114284%

I decided to do Sunday's long run as part of the marathon. So this morning, I went downtown early, and lined up in the corral. Since I paid the registration, I figured it was OK to run the course and take water, etc. The plan was to duplicate last week's long run of 12 miles with 2x3 miles at (MP, MP-15, MP-30). This was not very easy and I was right among various pace groups and it was impossible to run faster than the large crowd of runners. At 12 miles or so, I ran off the course and then waited a while and met up with everyone running the race. It was a tough day out there with the heat. My HR was much higher than it should be, hopefully it's just the heat. So the splits were:

Sorry you didn't go through with the marathon. It actually was not at all like last year, the temps were about 10 degrees cooler. At least the humidity was low. I did feel it heating up, but was able to down the electrolytes at about every aid station, stay in the shade where possible and utilize the sponges/ hoses. Hope your next one will have perfect conditions for you since like Glenn said "expensive 12 miler."
