No, matter of fact there is no sole. It just covers your upper foot. The bottom of your foot is fully exposed. It's barefoot running without anyone knowing. Of course I am kidding!
But from what I read there is no added cushioning.

Kenny, look at the pictures and read the description. It has some cushioning. 16mm to 11mm worth (less obviously when you take out the rubber underfoot). But point is there is some. It probably feels like a typical 5k/10k road racing flat. Plenty of cushioning for up to 10k for most.

Good point! The site I read said there is no "added" cushioning. I have no experience in using shoes this light but based on the details of the shoe I'd look at this for no more than 10k as you said. Especially for some of us heavier runners.

I've not experimented a great deal with racing flats because I don't race often enough to warrant making the investment, but my Zoom Streaks, which I've had for years, have very little cushioning and I've had no issue despite my size.
Logically, a heavier runner will compress their arch more and strike the ground with more force, but I would offer that the ability to run in racing flats has more to do with the strength of the muscles in the foot, biomechanics and foot type (specifically arch shape) and less to do with size/weight.

so funny I was going to say that in my original post but kept it out!
Re: Lightest Racing Flat Yet?
I was looking at it, I think it would suffice to the 1/2 for me. My current flat is a Saucony A5, which I have used from 5K to 1/2 Marathon. The A5 is enough shoe for a marathon for me, now these New Balance MRC5000 probably wouldn't be.

Yep my kind of shoe thinking about checking it out for the Chicago marathon this year and if it works there maybe even for JFK 50 miler. Hell I ran JFK last year in T7's and if people can run the same distance barefoot I'm sure 3.1 oz. can get the job done.
Most likely the only thing that is stopping me from buying them is 125.00 sorry refuse to pay 125.00 for a pair shoes! Maybe check out last years Nike Spiders for 85 bucks and come in at 5.3oz.. I can't remember the last time I have paid 100.00 or more for a pair of shoes.

If you're going to be doing trails the NB MT00 (this years trail minimus model) weighs in at 4.1 ounces, and is a little cheaper. I love mine!
