1. Any plans for the weekend? Travel or otherwise. We may go visit a friend up camping in the Columbia Gorge.
1a. Any plans/traditions specifically related to honoring our servicemen and -women? When I was young, we'd go put flags/flowers on ancestors' graves. Now, not so much.

2. Do you have any family members who served? My dad served during the Korean War, monitoring the air corridor to West Berlin. I believe I have a grandfather who served in World War I and several other ancestors who served in the Civil War.
2a. How about yourself? Just in the Peace Corps in Thailand.

3. Memorial Day 2010 was my first half marathon. When was yours? How'd it go? May 2007. It went well.

4. Memorial Day is the official beginning of summer, right? Pfft. Not here. Here, summer doesn't start until after July 4.

5. Did you know that the Indy 500 is the day before Memorial Day? No.

6. Have you ever been to Arlington? The Vietnam Memorial? Any other large/powerful national memorial site? None of the biggies.

---

Now things get a bit more random...

7. Finish the following sayings with new endings:
7a. People who live in glass houses... buy a lot of Windex.
7b. The grass is always greener... over the septic tank.
7c. Whenever one door closes... watch your fingers!
7d. When in Rome... start roamin'.
7e. A rolling stone... is outliving all these other rockers? How is that possible?
7f. Nice guys... are the silent majority.
7g. The squeaky wheel... is about to fall off.

8. Last thing you ate? How was it? Plain low-fat yogurt with strawberry preserves swirled in, topped with a handful of blueberries and a mix of whole-grain, high fiber cereals. It was delicious.

9. At what milestone will you stop chasing PRs? When the speedometer won't go any higher, it's time to focus on the odometer.

10. What's the most interesting thing you learned/read/heard in the past week? When running barefoot, your toes naturally dorsiflex before foot strike, which stretches the skin on the ball of your foot tight, allowing you to touch down without damaging your soles. No wonder I blow holes in the toe box of my shoes - my toes want to be free!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, all. Figured we hadn't had one of these in a while and this is a good chance for a themed one. Readysetgo!

1. Any plans for the weekend? Travel or otherwise.

Just hanging around home for the weekend. Soccer game to coach Saturday, county fair type thing in town this weekend, lots of relaxing...

1a. Any plans/traditions specifically related to honoring our servicemen and -women?

No but maybe making it down to DC soon to see the WWII and Vietnam Memorial would be a good idea.

2. Do you have any family members who served?

Grandparents and in-laws.

2a. How about yourself?

No, I've always been just a civilian.

3. Memorial Day 2010 was my first half marathon. When was yours? How'd it go?

First half? September 2008. That was really my first race of any kind. I was soooo nervous! It ended up being fun. I guess I was then hooked.

4. Memorial Day is the official beginning of summer, right?

I agree but the kids getting out of school is a big milestone as well.

5. Did you know that the Indy 500 is the day before Memorial Day?

I knew it was happening this weekend but not exactly when. The owner of my company is way into that.

6. Have you ever been to Arlington? The Vietnam Memorial? Any other large/powerful national memorial site?

Yes, many times. It is always humbling and inspiring to visit those sites.

---

Now things get a bit more random...

7. Finish the following sayings with new endings:
7a. People who live in glass houses...hopefully have some great views
7b. The grass is always greener...if you cut it to exactly 2 7/8" blade height.
7c. Whenever one door closes...another opens....unless you are in jail.
7d. When in Rome...keep driving to leave there and head to Utica. Actually, don't stop until you get to Albany. Better yet, power on to NYC.
7e. A rolling stone...never gets that pretty little green fuzz on it.
7f. Nice guys...are suckers
7g. The squeaky wheel...should be hit with some WD40

8. Last thing you ate? How was it?

It was a Stinger Waffle. Good but I need some real food now.

9. At what milestone will you stop chasing PRs? In the marathon, it would be sub 3:00. Hadn't thought about any other distance but pretty soon, I think.

10. What's the most interesting thing you learned/read/heard in the past week? I reviewed the US Men's National Team roster for the game I'll be going to Wednesday (US vs Brazil) and there were some interesting people included on the roster and some surprising cuts.

1. Any plans for the weekend? Travel or otherwise.
Aileen is coming down to visit her family, so I'll be up there. Going from a quiet, white household with max 4 people to an out of control, Cuban household with min 5. Sweet.

1a. Any plans/traditions specifically related to honoring our servicemen and -women?
My dad puts up the flag for the day. As well as other military holidays.

2. Do you have any family members who served?
Grandpa on my mom's side. WWII, Korea.

2a. How about yourself?
Nope.

3. Memorial Day 2010 was my first half marathon. When was yours? How'd it go?
What a coincidence, mine was Memorial Day 2010, too. It was good, though I missed my goal (1:45) by like 50 seconds. I was far too conservative in the beginning. At the finish line, though, I realized I could run a full.

4. Memorial Day is the official beginning of summer, right?
Right. Though today, it's overcast and was drizzly earlier.

5. Did you know that the Indy 500 is the day before Memorial Day?
I wikipedia'ed it. I should've known. My dad tends to have NASCAR on during the weekends when I'm visiting home. I don't get it.

6. Have you ever been to Arlington? The Vietnam Memorial? Any other large/powerful national memorial site?
Yes. Agree with what's being said - humbling and quite a surreal experience.

7. Finish the following sayings with new endings:

7b. The grass is always greener...

7f. Nice guys...
7g. The squeaky wheel...
All your responses were way to friggin' funny. I can't top those. Though I wish the people in the glass houses WOULD walk around naked.

8. Last thing you ate? How was it?
Amy's Bean and Rice Burrito with sliced tomato, avocado, and hot sauce on top. Looked like a big sushi roll. It was alright.

9. At what milestone will you stop chasing PRs?
Sub-3 for the marathon.

10. What's the most interesting thing you learned/read/heard in the past week?
That when a young mother asks her child "So what happens when you fall and crack your head open on the ground?" in a frozen yogurt shop, chiming in with "They'll make frozen yogurt out of it!" is not an appropriate response. Oops.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, all. Figured we hadn't had one of these in a while and this is a good chance for a themed one. Readysetgo!

1. Any plans for the weekend? Travel or otherwise.
No plans, just some good workouts. Was supposed to have my open water race this weekend, but for a lot of reasons, those plans got blown out of the water...

1a. Any plans/traditions specifically related to honoring our servicemen and -women?
Not really, just remember them in my prayers. As a veteran that made it through without a scratch, I really feel for those that gave so much AND their families.

2. Do you have any family members who served?
2a. How about yourself?
6 years Navy. Machinist Mate (worked in the engineroom of steam-propelled ships)

3. Memorial Day 2010 was my first half marathon. When was yours? How'd it go?
The only half I've ever done was during a half ironman, and it was ugly...2:02:06. Nasty...

4. Memorial Day is the official beginning of summer, right?
In theory... Schools out, so I guess it is!

5. Did you know that the Indy 500 is the day before Memorial Day?
The Great American Race! It would be fun to go to someday, although I'm not really into racing sports...

6. Have you ever been to Arlington? The Vietnam Memorial? Any other large/powerful national memorial site?
USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor. Very moving, especially when you are underway yourself.
---

Now things get a bit more random...

7. Finish the following sayings with new endings:
7a. People who live in glass houses... have creeped out neighbors?
7b. The grass is always greener... In Chad Ochocinco's bong
7c. Whenever one door closes... You never really know what will happen, so just keep moving... You might find another door open, but, then again, you might die a horrible death.
7d. When in Rome... do not expect ice cubes in your drinks...
7e. A rolling stone... concert ticket cost way to much for a very bad concert (in my opinion)
7f. Nice guys... are not elected to Congress
7g. The squeaky wheel... is my back wheel on my road bike and is driving me nuts

8. Last thing you ate? How was it? Cliff Bar - very good bachelor meal...

9. At what milestone will you stop chasing PRs? I haven't figured that out yet! Probably never - just move to something else...

10. What's the most interesting thing you learned/read/heard in the past week? I don't even watch the show, but I know some people that went to school with him and taught him - Phillip Phillips from Leesburg (where I now live) won the American Idol and I was happy for the town and for him - from what I understand he is a nice kid and good for him. Interesting story.

Thanks Mike.

1. Any plans for the weekend? La Marathon International de la Paix - Kigali RWA
1a. Any plans/traditions specifically related to honoring our servicemen and -women?
I never miss Rolling Thunder at the Vietnam Memorial ... except this year.

2. Do you have any family members who served? Brother, father, mother.
2a. How about yourself? Not I.

3. Memorial Day 2010 was my first half marathon. When was yours? Labor Day 2001 - the inaugural RnR Half Marathon VA Beach. I was overly enthusiastic, ran too hard and wound up with a stress reaction that turned to a stress fracture on 9/11/2001. Live & learn.

4. Memorial Day is the official beginning of summer, right? Is it?

5. Did you know that the Indy 500 is the day before Memorial Day? No, you?

6. Have you ever been to Arlington? The Vietnam Memorial? Of course. Read #1a.
