A tie for 3rd!

Post  Seth Harrison on Tue Jun 26, 2012 12:00 pm

I was surprised so to see that nobody had commented on the dead heat for third place in the women's 100 meters at the Olympic trials.
Here's a funny if slightly snarky take on it in the Times:

Ashton Eaton breaks the world record in the decathlon and naturally this debacle is getting all the attention. The ridiculous thing is they never had anything in the books in case of a tie to begin with.

The ridiculous thing is that they didn't have a run off already. It's 100m, not a 10k. They should have done this on Sunday or Monday and both still would have had days to rest and prep for the 200m. I swear, sprinters are such . . . uh . . . wimps.

I was shocked the USATF didn't have a rule in place for this contingency. I understand the odds of a tie are incredibly small, but come on, no one thought to have a simple rule in place just in case?

Obviously they need more lawyers.

How true. The new rule needs to fix at least one more contingency. Imagine what would happen in the extremely unlikely event of a third place tie in the OT marathon.

Under the new rule, either runner could opt for a head to head race instead of a coin toss. And USATF wold be compelled to hold such a race, which wouldn't exactly fit the training schedule of someone trying to peak for the games.

Why would either runner pick the race option? There might be lots of reasons. Here is one. Let's say you want to make the team and you know that the guy you tied with is slightly injured and needs the recuperation time before the Olympics. You opt for the race and force him to either forfeit or race with an injury.

That's not such a good way to pick an Olympic team. The new rule should mandate that for the marathon distance, ties will always be determined by coin flip.
