Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
Paul Ryan has been attacked in recent days for stretching the truth. But let's face it, lying about your marathon time is unforgivable.

Re: Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
Pretty sad. I was wanting to like him as a person even if I didn't agree with him on the merits. Young, wonky, a p90x devotee. He had such promise.
Romney/Ryan gets 0% of the black vote and now 0% of the runner vote.

Generalize, that's what politicians do! Get too precise and none of them would ever get elected. Yes, what a gaffe from our perspective. Maybe if he said high 3 something it would be more forgivable. But to say sub 3 that's a cardinal sin!

Someone DID say, on another post, "who cares?" and it turns out a lot of runners do.

Oops. Did I say sub-3? I meant to say over 4.
This just in...
Actual time, Grandma's in 1990: 4:01:25
Article: "If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three."

Maybe he was remembering some half-marathon he ran.

Re: Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
Apparently after seeing how the huge running community and all those researchers out there felt about that big ole exaggeration, he is retracting. Sheesh. This is politics 101...don't say anything you can't stand behind....especially when there would be a record out there somewhere of your actions. Ha! From now on my 5:11:xx marathon is just over 4 hours.

Politics means knowledge of being a citizen. Citizen means A person owing loyalty to and entitled by birth or naturalization to the protection of a state or nation.
Problem I see is politicians have separated themselves from being citizens and no longer feel they owe loyalty to the protections of the nation.
I personally don't care what lies they tell, it's the lies that they don't tell that scares me.
I am part of the LCN movement (liberal conservative newager). I just made that up and not sure what it means but I think it covers my views.
PS: If it ain't working it's time to move out of our comfort zone. Life begins when we do this. A new life!

Yeah, although I am not agreeing with lying or exaggerating, I care a lot more about a person's voting record and important issues. He definitely didn't lose every runner's vote.

I'm not too worried about the political aspects of it all, but I once ran a 2:30 marathon

I think you will have no problems getting your BQ again this fall! (well, in all seriousness I am really confident you'll get it this fall regardless).

Re: Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
To me this whole thing comes down to who Paul Ryan was trying to impress. If no one, he would have said 4 something hours (however you usually remember your first marathon time). If he was after the masses he could have said 6 hours and the masses would be impressed. Sounds like he was trying to impress the young, athletic group....in this case a wrong move in fabricating a time.
Sure there are worse things to lie about, but casual lying is where it starts. Sure there are worse things to worry about than a politician lying about his marathon time, I don't deny that but this is a starting place. Stupid!

Re: Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
Personally, I think he made his comments because he's not really a runner; just a guy who runs and doesn't get the runner culture. Times don't register with him and he just threw a number out there, probably trying to make himself look good (kind of like the guy I met at a gas station once who told me he ran 10.0 in the 100 back in the day).
He's also a politician, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a (misguided) attempt to reach out to a certain demographic. There are more important issues to be concerned with, but it was dumb on his part. It's not the first or last time a politician said something with their foot in their mouth.
Re: Lyin' Ryan and the marathon
I was about to say the same thing.
If one already has their mind made up against a candidate, then something like this would be easy to jump on.
A certain current VP has made incredible misstatements the past few years, but he seems to get a pass on most of them. He just has not been a runner and made a gaffe about his running record.
Seriously, there are much more important issues to worry about.
