January Marathon suggestions?

Post  Peg Coover on Mon Oct 15, 2012 12:26 pm

Hello.

Having been sidelined for my event last weekend, I am itching for a marathon. I looked at Phoenix Rock and Roll, but I have run that and my husband has done it twice as well. If I'm flying out of Nebraska I would really like to go somewhere else!

Any suggestions for a January or February marathon?

Thanks in advance!

Carlsbad, CA - I've only done the half, but it is a pretty course along the water as I've run a lot of it when my hubby lived out there. There are some hills, but Carlsbad is a beautiful area just 50 min north of San Diego and 90 min south of LA - so you could make a vacation of it.

Carlsbad is an out-and-back, I think. But it's all on the coast, so it is very pleasant.

In February is the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, CA. Never raced it, but it's in the heart of HB.

Not sure if there are course changes since the early 2000's, but when I did it it was relatively flat with an overpass or two, then one short and very steep hill around mile 18 that lead to an aid station by the local fire dept (that was the bonus for going up the hill Wink )

I haven't run it, but it's on my list. I'd check marathonguide.com if you want to know because I'm pretty sure they have profiles of each marathon there.

I have always wanted to run the Austin Marathon in February, both because the course is not too bad, although I think they have changed it a bit, and for the entertainment scene around the area.

The Mississippi Blues marathon has also received good PR.

And then there's Goofy!

Remember both First Light and Mississippi Blues might be in January, but they are in the Deep south where it can still be quite warm and humid - and I repeat, even in January. Both are excellent races and highly recommended by the maniac community since they are small and very well organized.

I would guess that Nebraska might be cold in the winter, so the humidity could be tough. And neither of them are in real scenic places.

RnR New Orleans is the end of February and I have run it twice (it used to be Mardi Gras when I first ran it). As much as I do not love RnR, their policies or their prices, this is a well run race, the course is very flat, and New Orleans is a great city. Yes, it, too, could be warm and humid, but both times I ran it the weather was perfect (and one time I lived in Ohio, not Atlanta, so I was worried about the humidity.) February is the coldest month in southern LA. I actually hope to be able to run the half this coming year, myself.

I'm not a huge fan of RnR either. My friend wants to do Phoenix, but we have all done that one--want to go somewhere else. The nice thing about Phoenix is that half marathon is a different course--less crowded. But my experience with RnR is they really cater to the half marathoners in terms of post race bash and goodies. And also quite pricey!

I would love to go to New Orleans! And I can handle warm and humid for a winter marathon! I like to think so anyway!

We have a few other marathons that are not Houston but are located in Houston in late December and January. Houston is full unless you want to run for a charity. They are smaller races but they are the following:

USA Fit Marathon
January 27th
http://www.usafitmarathon.com/

The 2 below are similar to the double half marathons you were supposed to do before your surgery. You can do the 1/2 on each day, run the full on each day, run a "goofy challenge" (1/2 and then full) or just run on a 1/2 or a full on one of the days. I will be running the full marathon on the 22nd. One thing to note though, it is a loop course and you run 2 loops for the 1/2, 4 loops for the full. PS. These marathons are put on by the same group that gives out this medal. See this comparison on the size: 2011-Texas-Medal-vs-San-Antonio-Medal.

End of the World Marathon
December 21

Day after the End of the World Marathon
December 22

Thanks for the info Joel. That End of the World sounds fun, except for the loops! The USA Fit marathon looks like a great event too! I just need to get my friends hooked on something....they were all gung ho before they ran the double half! I'm more gung ho since I missed out.

If you do NOLA, you have to watch your foot placement for the pot holes and the old brick roads.

What Doug says about the roads in NOLA is true, and I do remember that was tough in some stretches of the race - but I can tell you that they are no better here in Ohio.

By the way, don;t know if I mentioned it, but I believe I will be running the half with a GA friend while her hubby runs the full in NOLA.
