Looking for Fast Spring Marathon

Post  Alex Kubacki on Wed Oct 17, 2012 10:10 am

Yes I know it's early but I'm looking for a fast marathon in the mid-March to end of April time frame. I'm kind of looking mostly east to mid-west area. I ran Bayshore last spring but it's the end of May and I need something earlier. Thanks for any suggestions.

Lincoln Nebraska at the beginning of May is fast. If I remember right there is only one incline on the whole course and it isn't much of one. I think Illinois can be fast too. It is at the end of April. I haven't run the full at Illinois, but I love the half course there.

If you need something earlier than Lincoln, Abilene KS has a nice, very small one. It can be windy but there isn't much for hills and that is where I PR'd. It's the Eisenhower marathon and is early April.

Illinois is in fact fast if you get a day that's not windy. The temp has been great the last 2 years but it's been a bit windy. Had a PR there of 15 mins.

I know it might be a bit far from the Midwest, but the Eugene Marathon would fit the bill nicely.

It's run on the last Sunday of April. The course isn't overly hilly, and it's where I got my PR. A number of 365 folks have run it, and have given pretty good reviews.

It's also Track Town USA, so it's a great place to visit.

Reluctant to suggest something that I haven't run, but what about Narragansett in mid-April? From what I heard, it is very small and only slight rollers.

But that requires qualification, and I don't know what the requirements are.

Snickers Marathon in Albany Georgia is flat and fast, but Michele says it's a boring course.

You might also look into the Glass city marathon in Toledo 4/28/13; it is also flat and fast.

Snickers is indeed boring, but one of the flatest courses in GA. Most of the other Spring races I can think of are not fast or later like the Flying Pig or Cleveland. I did run the Pig one year and it was 40f and raining - so no complaints from me. It is usually the first Sunday in May.

I would also suggest Lincoln or Illinois. I have done both of them and they are both fast courses and quality events. No matter where you go you always have weather/wind as the unknown variable. I am going to do Illinois again this year and train to race it. Probably won't shoot for a PR but may come close.

Early March is the Albany (Georgia) marathon (formerly the Snickers Marathon). Fast, flat course with usually good weather. Lots of people BQ... And you would be welcome to stay with me when you come and save some hotel money!

Thanks everyone. I think I'm leaning towards Glass City in Toledo. I liked Illinois but for some reason the hotel and plane are so expensive. Athens looked good but unfortunately is the first weekend of a month and work makes it really tough to travel. Thanks John for the invite. I will do Eugene someday but that's more of a vacation trip as it's cross country. Lincoln, OK, KS are a little more logistical challenge than Toledo so I'll probably go with the easier.

Michael, Gansett is a BQ-5min qualifier so that's out. It would have been ideal though.

I get it. Sorry Gansett won't work.

I've driven to Toledo, so I take it you are flying! Very Happy

If you do drive to Toledo, I am directly on the way (and I believe only 2.5 hrs from there).

I really enjoyed the National marathon in DC last year. It's early March. I did notice that R&R has taken over ownership of it. The other thing is some inclined in the last few miles aren't pleasant but overall, it was a pretty fast marathon.

I'm probably going to fly into Detroit and drive down to Toledo. It's supposed to be about an hours drive.

That's about right - take I-75 or US 23, as I recall. Easy drive.
