You mention compartment syndrome. Is that part of that recurring problem for you?

Yes. Capital YES. It first started in 1991 and I have not been the same sense. I did run a 37:18 for a 10K in Raleigh, NC in 1997. I did run a 29:45 for 5 miles on the track in 1998, so not all was lost. Yes, my DC/PA first diagnosed it in 2005. Slowly but surely, we have extended the events of seizing up to 8 months. It has been 8 months since the last occurrence.

Not bad. Yes, it was hot (78). Yes, it was humid (66 percent). Yes, I was soaked at the end. I ran a 55:30 and am happy again. The legs are ok. Soleus, ok. The Gastrocs, ok. Not great, but ok. The plan is to run an 8 minute pace for Saturday through Tuesday, then take inventory of what is going on. I am not allowed to go below 7:56 pace no matter what. We have to let the muscles adapt again. I have 23 miles this week. We have a soccer game at 10 am tomorrow. We are 2-1-1 and tied for second in the league (Well, we do not keep score or results, but everyone knows....LOL) Run will be at 4 pm tomorrow. Right now, I am happy. At least I am running.

This explains so much. Have you ever consider compartment release surgery? I know Wendy Miller had it, and it seemed to make a huge difference for her.

Yes and no. I know that if I manage it well, I will be ok. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. We have it out to almost a year, so I think I will take my chances.

Yep, we were. I mean totally blown out 7-2. Wow. Just wow. We were never in the game. We are 2-2-1 on the season. My run will be at 4:30 pm. 8 minute pace for 7 miles. Just to get the legs back in some sort of rhythm. It is hot and sticky out. Lovely. This will give me 30 miles on the week. Not bad for missing Sunday through Tuesday.

Slowly. Saturday was at 56 minutes. It was ok. Today was at 55:12 for 7 miles. Legs were a little wonky, but ok. Last 17 minutes at a 7:51 pace. I am ok. Again, very gingerly until Wednesday. I have to bring them along slowly. I have 7 miles this week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Still Moving Along

Post  Michael Mitchell Wed May 01, 2013 9:48 am

Still on injured reserve. Slowly, coming back. Monday, 5 miles at 38:59. Last 10 minutes were at a 7:48 pace. Slowly coming back. Legs are sore, but that happens as my gastrocs and soleus gets adjusted to the inserts. Yesterday in the Cossaboom sweat tank, 55:18 for 7 miles. Again, it is ok. My legs are sore now, but will loosen up as the day wears on. Today, I have to run at home for my YMCA card got lost and they (Cossaboom) want to charge me 5 dollars for a new one. Humm. I spend three days a week at the YMCA and my monthly fees are $85 a month. Humm. I will get it replaced at Lake Houston. For the next 4 runs, it will be home. I have 19 miles this week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Gee Whiz

Post  Michael Mitchell Sun May 05, 2013 6:28 pm

Catching up. Wednesday, day off. Felt good to do that. Thursday, I was going to run, but I had to attend interviews for a new librarian with my president. Did not get home until 6 pm. No run there. Friday, I got home late and my wife wanted to go out to eat. I just did not feel like running and bagged it. Three days in a row. Wow. Well, I ran 5 miles in the morning at 40 minutes and 5 miles in the afternoon at 40 minutes to give me 31 miles for the week. Now, at first glance, that is terrible. After seeing that I am still recovering from Compartment Syndrome, not bad. We won by the way, 2-1. We are now 3-2-1 on the season. I now have to coach the last two games. The head coach will do his last practice Tuesday before he heads off to Saudi Arabia. Today. Well, to start, I cleaned the whole house. I am not sure what got into me, but I cleaned the whole house. Then, I did yardwork for 3 hours. Yep, three hours. Now, the temperatures have been amazing ( it is over after this, we go back to normal....83-63 for May), so I was not too taxed. Then my son wanted to go to the YMCA. I started at a 7:56 pace, but by the first mile, I was at 7:41 and was running a 7:36 pace. Yep, I was. I held on ( the last half mile was sore for I have not run this fast in over 2.5 weeks) and finished at a 7:30 pace and a 53:12 for 7 miles. Am I sore, yes. The quads are. The soleus is, but nothing I cannot massage out. I am happy. I will try to repeat a 53:12 tomorrow. Woo Hoo. I have 7 miles for the week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty No Run No Fun

Post  Michael Mitchell Tue May 07, 2013 10:34 am

No run yesterday. Got my Pilates in, so all was not lost. Will run today at 12 noon. Cossaboom, aka The Sweat Tank, for it is closer. 7:36 will be in the offing to Judas Priest "Nostradamus". I like it because all the songs are 7 minutes long...Meeting from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm today. Rush home to get the soccer balls for practice. I left them in the SUV after last game. Practice from 6 pm to 7 pm tonight. Last practice that the head coach will be there. From now on, it is all on me, including a 9 am game this Saturday. There is a 60 percent chance of rain too. Also, I have finals and research papers to grade...going into the weekend...grades are due Monday at 12 noon. Oh fun.

Yesterday's run was rough. Just rough. 52:42, but rough 7 miles. Legs are ok. Trying to get legs back. Today will be a run at home. Much warmer, but less humidity. I am shooting for a 7:36 pace for 7 miles. I am tired, but run will get done. I have 14 miles this week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Write A Book

Post  Michael Mitchell Sat May 11, 2013 9:26 am

I am thinking of writing a book about Compartment Syndrome. I love it. It make me the best I can be. Sigh. Yep, struck again. This time, a huge KNOT in my right calf. I made an appointment with the orthotist Monday at 8 am and I know I can run an 8 minute pace after that adjustment. It just needs a tweak. I did not run yesterday or Thursday. Same problems. Oh wait, I did run Friday morning of two miles. That is when the knot came up. I might be able to jog at a 10 minute pace, but otherwise, it is done until Monday. Fun. I have 23 miles this week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Amateurs

Post  Michael Mitchell Tue May 14, 2013 10:49 am

Before I get to that, let me say this. I hate Compartment Syndrome. I hate it. Sometimes I want the surgery and sometimes not. Man oh man. I did not run Sunday and ran yesterday. 3.15 miles in 30 minutes. Let me get to the amateurs. The orthotist that has handled me for the past five years has been BUSY. I mean busy. So much so, she can only see me for an appointment 1-2 weeks from a phone call. Now, that being said, the orthotist that was helping me did not Monday. New person. Oh boy. Had never heard of Compartment Syndrome. Could not pick ART out of a lineup. Oh boy. I tell her that my right calf is seizing with a knot and the soleus does not feel good. Well, she comes back with a wafer thin insert to be put at the bottom of my shoe, below the insert. Sigh. That makes everything even. That does not HELP the problem. I could have done that. Sigh. I knew it. When I ran yesterday afternoon, I knew it. I knew it. From this point forward, I will only deal with Reenie. She knows this like the back of her hand. I cannot see her until May 30. Second, I will be biking. My legs might be able to let be jog at a 10 minute pace, but we will see. If so, we will slowly get faster. I will use the inserts that are not so wonkey. Other than that, wait until May 30. Man oh man. I will have to get ART done this week, but that might be a Thursday thing. Man, I am so cross right now.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Biking To The Finish Line

Post  Michael Mitchell Tue May 14, 2013 2:24 pm

Biked a hard hour today. It was hard. I biked 14.44 miles ( I know, I know...indoor bike...LOL), but at least I burned 600 calories ( figures I found on bike sites, not the bike monitor). I will do an hour a day for two weeks. I will pound my frustrations out on it. LOL. I will also try to jog tomorrow. I will get ART done this week. I will do one session and maybe two. My DC and I can manufacture an 8 minute pace, I am sure of it. I will run with my regular orthotics until May 30. All I can do is scrape by this week and next. Also, Pilates and Ab Slides too.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty More Than A Sliver Of Light

Post  Michael Mitchell Wed May 15, 2013 12:36 pm

Maybe, just maybe I can get to an 8 minute pace for 7 miles before my orthotic appointment May 30. Why? Well, this morning, I was really close to it. I ran 2 miles in 20 minutes, but the last 7 minutes were at an 8:15 pace. I have ART at 5 pm today. I will be using my regular inserts and just going with it. Today at 1 pm, one hour bike ride at the level 2. Tomorrow, we will check out the running again in the morning. I am bound and determined to get back to at least an 8 minute pace before the adjustments. I have 5.5 miles this week.

Dissertating And Running - Page 5 Empty Encouraging

Post  Michael Mitchell Thu May 16, 2013 9:30 am

That is the word for the day. Encouraging. Sounds lovely right now. Yesterday, I thought I had an ART appointment. It was in my head and my heart, for after every session, I feel better. Not right away, but better. It would all fall within my plan. The plan, with the regular inserts, is/was to get back to an 8 minute pace for 7 miles and hold it there until May 30 (which is my next orthotic appointment with the orthotist that KNOWS Compartment Syndrome). I am sitting there and the receptionist asks, "Mr. Mitchell, are you sure you are supposed to be here today"? Humm, I respond, "I think so". Umm, no. It was today, not Wednesday. Now, bless my DC, he states, he could work me in, but it would be later than 6 pm after I was done. Well, I had to get my child at 6 pm. ( Today, I do not have those worries for the wife will pick him up from school). As a DC and a PA ( Physician's Assistant), he has a mix of medical and chiropractic patients, so he is VERY busy. That brings me to today. I was not expecting much from my morning run. Nothing. I ran for 20 minutes. That suprised me. That last 8 minutes were at an 8 minute pace. That shocked me. The knot in the calf is there, but not as prominent as it had been. I am thinking of running this afternoon ( I am definitely biking for an hour. I need to get the frustrations out.) I was thinking between 8 to 8:30 pace for 40 minutes. If I pull out 5 miles ( watching every 10 minutes and ready to jump off an massage the calf), then I should hit the 56 goal by Saturday. I have 7.5 miles this week.
