I thought this was cool. Volunteers run the races and provide in race first aid support. A friend and I are getting certified in CPR/AED/First Aid so we can volunteer (I was previously certified but they have lapsed). I think in nearly every longer race I have run I have seen someone fall or be in need of something, and often I have given bandaids or gels from my personal stash to others, and that was when I wan't actively looking to help. So I figure I might as well make myself useful in races that I don't mind doing as a training run or don't care about overall time.
