For Boston
In the immortal words of the Dropkick Murphys, in April, I'll once again be "Shipping up to Boston". Technically training began on Monday, but over the next two weeks, it will be tough to keep on schedule with holiday expectations, driving to NC, then GA, then NY state over New Years and back. But I'm getting in the miles as I can to keep the fitness before I get into the heavy lifting. My main goal is to stay healthy through this winter and get as many outdoor runs in as possible. We've already had more snow than we need and winter doesn't begin until tomorrow.
This will be an interesting year at Boston as you all know. I wonder what the increased numbers will mean for an already crowded starting area, but I'm really interesting in beating this course in April. I've run it so many times and only twice do I feel like I won the battle rather than the course winning. Even when I ran 3:03 back in 1986, the course won (it was a nice crash and burn, but that was a long time ago before I really knew what I was doing). I'm even considering going to a McMillan camp in February that is specifically geared towards Boston training and course discussion. Not sure on that yet, but it sure would be nice to get to some warm weather in Phoenix and out of the cold and snow. It also includes running a flat, fast half marathon which would be a great and hopeful morale booster.
Anyway, I'll do my best to keep up with this blog and the winter training. This always keeps me honest.

Re: For Boston
I look forward to seeing how your tussle with the weather works itself out. Down here, the first day of winter might be 80 degrees, followed by seasonal weather (64 degree highs) all next week.

I'll enjoy following your training. Wish I could be there in April. I think it's going to be a pretty special day!

Re: For Boston
Michele, good luck in your training and be careful though I know you always are. You have a great base from this year to build off of. I've only run it twice and neither time was a good race. I went to the FIRST running camp some years ago and really, really enjoyed it so I am guessing that camp you are looking at will be good, especially if you follow some sort of McM plan. Even if not, it would probably be a great experience.

Look forward to seeing you in Boston, Michele.
About the training, I would be careful for any camp. Not to discount McMillan's knowledge, I just don't know how comercial the camp is and don't like blanketed instead of individualized training plan. You have the experience to take care of you from any disadvantage of their plan, but then you don't get your money worth.

Re: For Boston
I'm following an individualized plan from McM. I used one in 2004 leading up to the Pig, and it took me successfully through an Ohio winter back then. The camp is mostly about strategy and God knows that I have never really conquered the course except for the hot year! It also provides an entry to a fast and flat half (and one of my running/biking friends from the summer takes her Dad to Phoenix in February, so she has signed up for the half too) which is good timing. I'm also set to run the Youngstown OH half which is quite hilly as a MP run and then race the Publix Half in Atlanta in late March.
You are correct though Jerry and I'm skeptical too as I have probably actually run Boston more times than most of the attendees (and maybe McMillan himself), but any little thing that I take away will be a bonus.
Running has actually gone well so far this week although it is far colder in NC and GA than I expected

Re: For Boston
Interesting run today. 4 miles in 51 min in 4" of snow over a couple of inches of packed ice and snow. They do not plow here by the lake (where we summer ) or use salt (which is good) so unlike Cleveland where it was bare ground and then just dust, it was a tough run over ice and snow in snow! It is still snowing!
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Michele.
Does a 'lake effect snow' affect y'all or is that just a Lake Erie thing?
And it's startling to me that you can run through 4 inches of snow that's on a couple of inches of packed snow and ice at a pace just a tad slower than what I can run on dry, flat, (I won't mention temperatures) and in shorts. Hmmm.

Re: For Boston
Thanks Doug and Julie. Lake Effect snow, I believe happens around all of the Great lakes and it affects me both in Cleveland and in Chautauqua. In Cleveland, I live on the west side of the city, right on the lake, and I get about 1/3 of what they get on the east side of the city (Shaker Heights). Chautauqua is in the "snow belt" that lies between Lake County Ohio (Chardon and east) to Rochester and beyond. Chautauqua often gets 300" each winter.
Re: For Boston
They say that what doesn't kill you make you stronger and if winter continues as is - I might be the next Rock. Looks like my planned steady state run will be forced indoors on the treadmill later today after I catch up with work. O joy!
Re: For Boston
300" of snow would be unbearable.
Best wishes on the TM run. You are tough!

No kidding - that is why it is really a summer community, but people do live in the Mayville/Jamestown, NY area all year round. The 300" is of course from October through May. I think Buffalo gets as much.
Re: For Boston
A bit lax on blogging with travelling and other stuff going on like frozen pipes in my master bath - yuk! The weather is supposed to be in the 40s by Thursday and they will unfreeze. The good and bad news is that the feed line that froze is over my neighbors unheated garage and he is never there (strange situation as he doesn't live there), so they could burst, his garage could become a skating rink and I will only know if my water meter goes crazy. O joy!!!!
I did run 6 miles of the Boston course today on my TM and then did 10 1 min pickups at 6:45 pace.

Frozen pipes are never no fun! Looking forward to a little warm-up here myself.
Nice little run you put in today!

Re: For Boston
It is very weird that Google knows its my birthday today. Kind of creepy. Hot water pipes have unfrozen and all seems ok for now. Neighbor showed up at 5:30 this morning to check on his place and called me - called at 5:30 am. Not sure my college age daughter is happy with that right now, but she did manage to go back to sleep which is more than i can say for myself. It is a balmy 9F this morning and actually feels normal. I'd run outside later if the sidewalks and road shoulders weren't skating rinks. I think one more day inside is called for especially since it is just a recovery run and I know I'll be sore as my first core class since the middle of December was this morning.
By the way, Mark, plumber is actually coming around 10 am.

Happy Birthday Michele!
So, did the pipe burst? I'm glad you were able to get a plumber on such short notice.
Stay warm and safe today, the weather is coming around and should be much better in the next day or two.
