Hi (again) everyone...
Hey
folks, I've been absent from the site here for a pretty long time, probably
since late last summer, but I'm hoping to jump back into the discussions, and
perhaps get back to keeping a blog, so I wanted to say hi, and give a brief
update on what I've been up to.
After re-qualifying for Boston (by a mere 14 seconds) in Philly 2011, my knee,
which if anyone remembers, has been operated on three times, went steadily
downhill in the winter of 2012. This, probably more than anything, factored
into me staying away, having little motivation to keep writing about my injury
woes. Having no choice but to forgo a marathon last year, I trained for and competed
in two Sprint tri’s over the summer. These were my first attempts at
triathlons, and along with not drowning, and having a blast, all the cross
training, and less days of running, did wonders for my knee. Building on the
success of that type of training, I decided to base my Boston training on the
FIRST training programs, which if you don’t know, is based on three days a week
of running, with additional intense cross training. I’ll get more into that
when I start a blog, but suffice to say the training has gone very well so far.
My strength and paces are probably further ahead at this point than I figured
they’d be, and the knee has held up surprisingly well. This coming weekend will
be my second of a planned four 20-milers.
I’ve
missed the conversation here, so I’m hoping to catch up with everyone to the
extent possible. I look forward to reading some blogs and seeing what
everyone’s been up to. Thanks for reading!

Welcome back, Seth. does this mean that I will finally meet you in Boston this April? Millrose is coming up - are you reporting?
it is also funny that you mentioned the FIRST program as I just suggested that Carleen look into it and its three day per week schedule.

Welcome back, Seth! It's good to see you found something that's helped you work past your injuries. Not drowning is also a good thing.
Looking forward to reading more about your training.

Hi Michele, the plan is definitely to be in Boston, so I'm also hoping that we'll get to finally meet. If I remember, on my last work trip down to the Atlanta area, you were up at the Chautaqua Institute in upstate NY.
As for the Millrose Games, they're held on Sat. night 2/16. I don't usually work on Saturday's but I may try to switch with another photographer and work that night. I cover track all winter long at the Armory (in fact, my car got broken in to two weeks ago while I was inside covering a HS meet!), so I know that place really well. It's a terrific indoor track and field facility, and they pack it in for the Millrose Games, unlike when it was held at MSG, where it felt totally empty and lacked any energy.

Thanks Mark. I'm using the FIRST plan as a rough template, while still working with my coach. So far, so good. The three days of running include a tempo run, a day of speedwork, and a long run. No easy days to be sure.

Hi Seth,
Welcome back.
I recall you mentioned you didn't like to do any other sports and am glad you enjoyed your bike and swim adventures.
Btw, you didn't miss much cause Jerry hasn't run another sub 3 marathon.

Thanks for the welcome back everyone. I'm trying to think of a name for a Boston training blog. Once I do , I'll start posting more about my training. In the meantime, I'll get caught up with everyone else.

Welcome back, hope your knee fairs well. I've got an idea for a title, how about "Boston Marathon Training blog." Oh wait, that's right, you're a journalist and need to maintain a high standard of creativity!

Thanks Steve...I came up with a usable, if not terribly creative title, and the new blog is up.

I didn't drown, but I certainly didn't distinguish myself in the water in either of the two tri's. It wasn't pretty...
