Socks / No Socks
Socks or No Socks
First, I am not talking about any baseball team.
Do you run with or without socks. Or either depending on which pair of shoes you grabbed?

Re: Socks or No Socks
Can't run without them anymore. I get wicked blisters and actually have some blood stains on a current pair because I forgot socks for a 10 miler one day.

Re: Socks or No Socks
For me it depends on the shoe.
Brooks Green Silence and NM Minimus Trail are sans socks. Sometimes the Brooks T7 Racers are too.
All the other shoes are with socks.

Run with socks always have and always will especially after seeing Brain Sell's feet after the Olympics. No need to put my feet through that!
As for what kind of socks I'm not really picky as long as they are light and thin more so when I'm racing. Just not into thick socks when it comes to running.

Because they don't show the dirt or turn brown...

Re: Socks or No Socks
I run with socks but the poll should have had color. When I wear black socks, I know there is some element of speed in my workout - intervals, fartlek, tempo, etc. When the brain see the black socks, it knows it is in for a tougher run.
When I wear white socks, it's an easy run. It might be 5-6 miles or a 10 miler, but it will be easy.
When I wear thicker socks, the brain knows it a recovery run.

I thought so too. As I read that, believe it or not, I could feel the colors...that sounds weird, but true. The colors chosen match the training perfectly! Good stuff, John!

When I ran track, I wouldn't wear socks with my spikes. Maybe that's because I was a steeplechaser, but I didn't wear socks for my other events either (or during cross country).
Re: Socks or No Socks
I ran once without socks, the day I forgot them when I was running on a treadmill in the club (in the dead of winter) - my heels (Achilles area) was chewed up sooo bad.
I swear by Wright Socks - double layer anti-blister socks. Got blisters every run/rack over 13.1 until I switched, never had a blister since!!
Edit: I like the black no-show, but the two pairs of grey no-show socks just seem to fit so perfectly. My favorites!

Ditto on the Wright's. Exact same experience as Pete.

Re: Socks or No Socks
I have never tried running without socks. My fear is that I would blister or get my heals chewed up. Plus, my feet sweat a lot and I am not sure what affect that would have.

Re: Socks or No Socks
When I was younger 26-30 years ago a lot of us went without socks to cut down on weight etc. Don't remember a higher incidence of blisters etc. Now some of those running socks are so thin as to add little or no weight. So at this point I always run with socks.

Re: Socks or No Socks
When I do wear socks, I prefer Drymax Hyper Thin socks. Much nicer than Balega.
Re: Socks or No Socks
I always run with socks and all of my socks are colored with various patterns or art from "Sock Guy". It has kind of become my trademark. My XC kids always checked them out each day.

So it's safe to say you have a sock fetish Michele?

Re: Socks or No Socks
I love my socks. I tend to like no show socks or low cut. I don't like them coming out of the shoe. Not one to advertise on the full crew socks plus it makes me look even wackier then I already look. There are some great shoos Zoot etc were sockless running makes good sense. To each is own.

Re: Socks or No Socks
I am so blister prone that I have to have socks. I prefer injinji toe socks for preventing toe blisters, but they don't prevent blisters on the side of my feet quite as well. I also like drymax and wright socks. I love Balega for overall comfort, but I tend to blister more in them. Overall, I run the most in injinjis.
I also tend to go for black. Not only to hide dirt, but to hide blood if a blister breaks. I have some pretty ugly looking white socks!

Re: Socks or No Socks
I wear smartwool socks. I know a few runners who don't wear socks, but when I see the socks wear down and get threadbare, I think, "Oh, I'm glad it's taking the wear instead of my foot." Maybe that is illogical, but it seems to work for me.
