Achilles? Empty Achilles?

Post  nkrichards Mon Apr 01, 2013 11:41 am

I've been having a bit of pain in the Achilles area for several weeks now. It's not on the back of the heel and it isn't consistent. It is very sporadic and I can't figure out a movement that causes it. It is a fairly sharp pain (vs a dull ache) but not an intense pain and goes away quickly. It seems like it kind of starts at the base of the heel where I would assume the Achilles attaches but radiates towards the ankle bone on the inside rather than up the tendon.

I've been running fairly low mileage recently while concentrating on swimming and core work so don't think it's from overuse. But...I haven't been doing much in the way of calf stretches and last night when I did I noticed they were pretty tight.

Does it sound like an Achilles issue? Do I need to have it diagnosed or can I get by with stretching and strengthening my calves? Advice??

I'm anxious to increase my mileage and don't want this to be an issue...

Thanks...Nancy

Start with calf stretching (towel stretch and hold for 2 min) and I would roll the foot like for PF as well. If it doesn't stress it, do eccentric heel drops (just google them) and these will all help curb achilles issues before they materialize, and something I wish I had done last year when mine started to act up.

Thanks Michele...I'll give that a try and see how things go. So far it hasn't affected my running but I want to be proactive.

I am late on this but, achilles injury can be a bitch and stretching the calf prior to the injury might be helpful but during it I would not dare! For me it made it worse and my Podiatrist prescribed no stretching until it completely healed.

Hopefully, your achilles never got injured maybe just flared or niggled.

If it continues to be a problem, a visit to a sports podiatrist might we wise. I tried to run on a sore achilles for a year. When my podiatrist sent me for an MRI, it was a tear. I had to have it surgically repaired and was out of running for the better part of 6 months.

Good suggestions above. There's also a chance it might not be your achilles. There are a lot of smaller support muscles down there, and you've probably been working them in a different way with the additional swimming you've been doing.

One thing to work on those muscles are storks (one legged-standing) and alphabet stretching (when you point your toe and trace the letters of the alphabet in the air). Also, eccentric heel drops with the knees slightly bent - or latrine squatting - can help, too.

Thanks all for the comments/suggestions/advice.
I've come to the conclusion that it isn't an Achilles issue but a lingering weakness from an ankle/foot injury (farming not running) that put me out of my marathon last fall. I took a couple days off and then tried to run through it. Bad idea. When I realized that the marathon was out I just stopped running and didn't really do anything to rehab it. 2nd bad idea.

I haven't had an MRI or anything but I've had it looked at by a couple people that know more than me. They came to the same conclusions and made the same suggestions that you all had here on the boards.

I'm doing the suggested exercises along with stretching and rolling and easing into my mileage. It's still noticeable occasionally but is much much better and I think as long as I'm careful it will be fine.

Thanks again for the input.

It may take some time, but I think that you are now taking the right approach Smile Remember to not try to rush it or you may make things worse (been there...done that).
