Re: Your Week in Training May 20 - 26
Woot! Way to go, Carleen! Congrats.
---
It's weird to say that a 40-mile week is a step-back, but I guess it shows how the world has changed.
Tue: 2.2 miles walking
Wed: 3.1 miles barefoot
Thu: 6.3 miles low HR
Fri: 6.3 miles on hills (still low HR)
Sat: Rest
Sun: 8.3 miles low HR with MAF test; 4 miles hiking with family
Mon: 10.3 miles low HR in the rain.
Week: 40.4 miles
Next up: Two harder weeks, each finishing with a 10-26 back-to-back as the peak phase of preps for the Mount Hood 50 continues.

Impressive Carleen! I may have to look into your training plan in a bit more detail. If I remember right you're using Hansen. I think our marathon times are similar...what pace are using for your 6x1 mile run?
Easy week for me with lots of farm work in the mix.

Re: Your Week in Training May 20 - 26
I'm trying to decide between Hanson's Adv and Hal's II Adv. if that helps and likely settling on something of a mixture between the 2 which has elements of both (6 days of running, no doubles) but leans towards Hal on the long runs (yes to 20s) but Hanson on some of the 'strength' workouts. Happy to send you mine once I finalize it this week if you think it will be worth looking at.JohnP wrote:Just aimlessly training, trying to recover at the same time, trying to decide which program to follow for a fall marathon and leaning to Hansen's program.

And by the way, I ran some this week. Not as much as I want to be doing but a heck of a lot more than I was doing a month ago. Maybe 40 miles? Did 13.1 today but I guess that counts for the next "week in training". I don't ever record or write down what I run which I sense is a big exception to the norm around here.

Yes, I am doing the classic Hanson program, and am loving it so far. I feel like every week I am getting stronger and faster. I'm in the strength phase, so the 6x1 mile was at marathon pace, minus 10 seconds. For me that was at about 9:20. My current marathon PR is 4:28:48 and I am going for 4:10 in Missoula in July. I'm aiming to run it at around a 9:30 pace.

Yes, I would definitely be interested in what you come up with. I tend to change methods every few years believing that the body needs to mix it up to improve. So I've tried Hal's, Pete McMillan, Brad Hudson and Pfitz. The Hudson book is very impressive all around in my view. Besides Carleen's impressive results, a guy at work used it to train for the Illini marathon in March and ran astoundingly better than he expected and even BQ'd. He completely credits the plan. At first, I thought the paces weren't very aggressive (MP, MP-10, etc.) compared to others but it's really the change-up I think I need.

Those paces are a bit deceptive. I thought they looked milder too, but the strength workouts are kicking my butt. When you get that cumulative fatigue thing going from the program, it gets a lot tougher to do 9+ miles of long intervals at MP-10. I was surprised! In my case, I'm adding in a bit of steamy weather too, which I imagine is also making it harder. I did the 4x1.5 miles with 800 recovery today and I am totally worn out!

For what its worth John I think the Hudson plan is very tough. At least the Level 3 plan. I've tried to get through the program twice in the last few years and could only manage about 80-90% of what the planned called for. Carleen is right, the cumulative fatigue of trying to do lots of 10-15 mile easy/moderate runs and then 1-2 workouts per week was very challenging I found. And I was never able to get through the 3 x 15min threshold run with 1 min recovery. I really want to nail that run one day. (Note: you gotta be real honest with yourself if you try this run as I tend to overestimate my MP, HMP and 10k pace in the middle of a training block)

Re: Your Week in Training May 20 - 26
Getting behind posting AND a little behind on my current plan...although marathon training doesn't start until 6/3/2013:
Wed (5/22): 4.1
Thurs (5/23): 5.0
Sun (5/26): 7.2
Total Wk: 16 mi
Total Month: 72 mi
Total Year: 183
Difficult week...got home from FL Monday evening, up to L. Erie Thursday to prep the boat to go into the water on Friday, splashdown for Ocean Breeze Friday, Memorial Day weekend when everyone and their kids are at the lake.
Still trying to decide which marathon I'm working toward for a BQ (if I have any of those left in me)...Columbus (my favorite for BQ and PR) or Space Coast. I hate putting that kind of effort into a marathon I've never run and don't know the logistics. I like the layout of Space Coast from what I can see on Google...but we all know a sky look can be very deceiving.
