sausage fingers
On my long run yesterday after about 3 hours my fingers and my running partners were so swollen it hurt to bend them. I drank approx. 24 oz. of water and took 3 power ade gels with caffeine, and ate a few jelly beans. This happens to me on long run what causes it ? and how can I stop it? Is it related to sodium levels? I wasn't sweating a lot because it was pretty cool out.We ending up running for 4 hours it was a trail run and took a while,I'm training for my first 50K trail and I'm hoping to get things as right as possible

Re: sausage fingers
I get that sometimes, although not to any extreme, and usually taking in more electrolytes seems to help prevent it a bit for me. I also came across this short article that was sort of helpful: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hand-swelling/AN01403
Re: sausage fingers
This is pretty common in hikers/backpackers, so I'd imagine it could be the same thing with running. Try lifting your arms over your head every once in a while and making fists, wiggling your fingers, etc. If nothing else, passersby will think you're celebrating.

It happens to me sometimes, too, and I wonder about electrolytes, as well.
The friendly people who make S-Caps put together a handy chart on this webpage that shows what happens in various stages of dehydration vs overhydration and electrolyte depletion vs. electrolyte overload. Even if it doesn't provide a clear answer, maybe it'll give you some ideas on various adjustments you can make to find what works best.

I think part is the heat, too. That will happen to my mom when she's out for a walk and I don't think there's an electrolyte issue. I do arm circles during longer runs to keep my shoulders looser and sometimes have had that happen to my hands on long runs.

Interesting. I sometimes have a hard time bending my fingers when I get up in the morning, but never on a run.

The first thing that comes to mind is a sodium issue. Are you taking in too much sodium? Enough to retain water. I know that when I take in an abnormal amount of sodium, my ankles/feet swell (But never when running). I don't eat a lot of sodium, so I think it affects me more.

That is a possibility. I have to have salt just so my blood pressure doesn't get too low. But I think my finger and other joint issues are more likely good old arthritis.
