Redemption: 2013 Hamilton Road2Hope Marathon

Post  Nick Morris on Mon Jun 24, 2013 11:30 am

Redemption, is the theme that I am using for this year's training cycle.  I have decided to head back north of the border to Canada run the Hamilton Road2Hope Marathon once again.  I do so, as last year's race left a bittersweet taste in my mouth.  For the previous three years, I have been chasing down the elusive Boston Qualifying time.  In 2010, I was on pace through 10 miles before my gluteus minimus and medius blew out at Chicago.  In 2011, the warm temperatures did me in at Scranton and I finished 8 minutes short of my goal.  Finally, last year I came within 29 seconds of running a Boston Qualifying time.  Yes, I did set a new marathon PR time with a 3:05:28, but it was not my end goal.

So, it is this year that I head back to Hamilton to conquer my goal...To run a sub 3:05 marathon and run the 2015 Boston Marathon.  This thread will be used to document my 2013 training cycle and the journey that I will take Smile

I hope that you will enjoy reading of my struggles and my successes.  And feel free to chime in at all times.  I love a good discussion...

06.24.13 -

Day 1 of training in the books.  My schedule called fro a cross training day, but since I am traveling tomorrow for work, I figured I would get my Tuesday run in, as well.  That way I have some flexibility while in El Paso.  I did some weight training followed by a four mile run.  I completed 4.23 miles at a 7:31 pace.  I pushed it a little bit harder than I normally would, because a line of thunderstorms was closing in.  I managed to finish before the rain.  After the 15 minutes of rain, I was off to my late night softball game.  Whew...what a first day of training.  Now I am off to bed, as I have a 5am flight to catch.

Way to start out a training cycle in an exciting way, Nick!

Here's hoping all the pieces come together -- and stay together -- for that much-deserved BQ.

Thanks!!  I think that running the course once is going to pay big dividends.  Plus, knowing that the course may be a tick long means that I am going to train for a little bit faster pace.

06.25.13 -

So, I made it to El Paso in one piece.  It took me 10+ hours to get here, but I made it.  It is a good thing that I got in my first run yesterday, as there was no way for me to get in a four mile run today.  After the 10+ hours of flights/airports, I had to meet with my team, and then entertain the client at dinner.  I am just now making it back to my room.  Ugh, the road is sometimes not all that it is made out to be.  Did I mention that I got up at 2:30am?

Up early tomorrow to run six miles here in El Paso.  It's going to be a scorcher!!!

06.26.13 -

6 miles...Up early this morning to get in my 6 miles.  It was already 81 degrees at 5:30am, and the sun was just starting to think about rising Smile  Last night I mapped out a 6 mile route through and around the UTEP campus using Google Pedometer.  Then this morning I wrote down all of the pertinent turns/streets on my hand and off I went.  I come to realize that the campus in built on many hills and they go up more than they go down!!  The largest climb was along Sun Bowl Dr., which circles around the football stadium.  Don't get me wrong, it was a scenic part of the run, but also challenging.  I ended up running that part not once, but twice. (I must love challenges)  I ended up running 6.13 miles at a 7:58 pace (the pace for the hill(mountain Smile)around the stadium was around 8:35-8:40).  Not a bad first run in El Paso and I got it in before the temps soar to 105 today.  Four more miles tomorrow morning before heading to the airport.

06.27.13 -

4 miles...My last morning in El Paso found me out early again trying to beat the heat.  I did pretty much the same route as yesterday, but just cut a little out of the final little loop to make it 4 miles in stead of 6.  The mini mountain was still there and it didn't get any smaller.  Below is an image of the top.  It is kind of deceiving hill as you start out it doesn't look so bad.  But then you turn the corner and still have this mess to go up.  On top of that, the downhill on the other side is shorter and more gradual, doh...I got in 4.18 miles at a 7:51 pace.  Later today I head back to Wisconsin, where I guess we have been experiencing a lot of rain and flooding.  A far stretch from El Paso...

Nice work, Nick.  Never been to El Paso, but I didn't expect to see a mountain like that.

The biggest difference from last year's training is that I cut out two weeks of training, as 21 seemed to be mentally draining.

06.28.13 -

Scheduled Off Day - Today is my first scheduled off day of the training cycle.  IT actually comes at a great time, as I have a bit of jet lag from my 11 hours of travel yesterday.  Tomorrow I have a 6 mile run scheduled, followed by 14 on Sunday.  I will need to enjoy these lighter weekends while I can, as they will quickly be gone Smile

06.29.13 -

6 miles...Wet and rainy this morning, but it didn't stop me from getting my 6 mile run in this morning.  A nice fast pace to get the blood flowing, while the rain beat down on my head.  I finished 6.27 miles at a 7:26 pace.  Now, the rain has stopped in perfect timing for my round of golf with my dad...14 tomorrow...enjoy the day!!

I registered on Monday and thought I would check flights while I was thinking of it.  Got my flights organized...cheaper and better flights than I found a few weeks ago.  I booked my hotel earlier so I'm all set.  Smile

Oh yea...I guess I need to train!  Training actually seems to be going well.  I'm running a 10K on the 4th and will use the results of that to help me narrow down my goal pace.

Sounds like you've been fitting some good runs into a busy schedule.

I'll have to  check flights to Buffalo again.  Maybe they have gone down, too.  I did notice that Buffalo is cheaper than Toronto.  Thanks for that suggestion!!

Good luck with the 10K

The midwest has been fairly cooperative (so far) in the weather department this year.  What sort of temps did you run Hamilton in last time?

Last year it was 32 degrees at the start and it stayed in the 30s for most of the race.  I think the hi for the day was like 41.  The wind was pretty calm at like 7 or 8 mph.  To me it was pretty good weather for racing.  I am hoping for similar conditions this year...

06.30.13 -

14 miles LSD...14 miler this morning.  I ended up running near my parents house, as I went to visit yesterday for my Dad's birthday.  They have a crushed limestone train the runs out into the country.  I got a later start then I wanted to, but it wasn't too bad.  The last mile and a half was the worst, as the entire stretch has no shade ad the temps were up into the mid 70s.  Even with the warmth, I managed to knock out the last 1.5 miles at a 7:28 pace.  My Mom rode her bike with me, so I had some company and a pace setter Smile  I completed a total of 14.27 miles at a 7:58 pace.  A great start to the first week of training.  35.08 miles total on the week...

Good luck with the 10K

I actually ended up booking flights into Detroit.  It's just over a 3 hour drive to Hamilton but the combined flight/drive time is the shortest option available for me.  It's a non-stop flight ( just over 4 hours) into Detroit and then a 3 hour drive which I'll split between Friday evening and Saturday morning.  Flying into Buffalo, London, or Toronto required at 7-8 hour plane trip including layovers plus an hour or more driving time.  I'm happy to drive a bit longer to avoid time in an airport and a risk of a missed connection.
