Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
My 20 yr old daughter was mortified as she said that the young people who read RS will now just make a martyr of him.
Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I don't understand what the fuss is all about?
If Rolling Stone wants to think of themselves as a credible news outlet (though I would question that) and report a different side to the story shouldn't they be allowed?

It's got nothing to do with the story itself. It's the seeming glorification of a guy who killed people with a bomb intentionally and just generally giving him more publicity and attention. I don't think you'd see near the outrage if Miley Cyrus was the feature on the cover and there was a small 2" x 2" photo of him with a note about the story.

Exactly...Why give this guy more attention, when he doesn't deserve it. All he deserves is to rot in prison for the rest of his life.

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I almost hesitate to comment but here goes. RS is in the business of selling their magazine, releasing the cover before the story is focused on only one thing, selling as many copies as possible. They have the right to print what they want to, just like we all have the right to be outraged and to not buy a copy. I will not be buying a copy.

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I'm not overly concerned about a magazine cover. The print business is in the crapper and they'll probably end up with a lift on sales just from the controversy, despite (or even because of) the backlash. No big deal... and it's not unprecedented. They ran a Charles Manson cover years ago. Hell, Time magazine ran a cover with the Columbine killers... that's what media is in a free society. As was suggested earlier; if you don't like it, don't buy it. Just don't scream about how 'they shouldn't do it'. It's media and a 1st Amendment right in this country.

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I'm with Ben - I don't see the big deal.
First, the EXACT same picture of the Bomber was all over news outlets and magazines at the time of his arrest. This isn't the first time the picture has made the rounds.
Second, this is far from the first time a mass murderer has been on the cover of a magazine. Charles Manson was on the cover of Rolling Stone. The Columbine shooters graced the cover of time. The only difference is now we have facebook and twitter so people can express their faux outrage du jour. (see, Kony 2012).
Third, the fact he looks like a normal, if not slightly glamorous, college-aged kid is part of the point. It's what makes his story unique. It's why he, and not the radical older brother, is the story. It doesn't interest you slightly that this seemingly normal college kid was capable of this? The cover photo helps set the tone of the story. Not gonna lie, I'm looking forward to reading it.

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
The story is online and I read it. Nothing new really. It points tow what Dave said, but I still don't like his glorification on the cover of a magazine that promotes Rock Stars. Frankly, I doubt I would be upset at all if it was Time. Matt is correct - that is what the first amendment is all about.
Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I agree with the Mayor.
I wish they had instead placed a picture of Giacomo's tasty Italian and Mike's Pastry---Cannolis. Now that would be music to my ears! While they were at it, they could have displayed a pic of the 4th of July fireworks at the Esplanade. They were awesome this year!
Boston strong!!!

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I just read that the Massachusetts State Police Photographer released photos the night of the bomber's arrest to Boston Magazine. It seems he was uphappy about the RS cover and wanted to shed more light on the bomber. Below is a link to the article, but the link to the Boston Magazine article crashed, so I have not been able to read that.

Now it looks like the officer has been fired for releasing the photos...

Re: The Cover of Rolling Stone
I don't see anything to do with the 1st amendment - I don't think anyone suggested it illegal to publish this, it is just in many people's opinions in poor taste. Basically meh, who cares. I'm not shocked and never read that crap anyway. If people were going to glorify something evil, they would not need a magazine cover to do it. Just my opinion...

I saw it, looked twice and then past right by it and never looked back.
