tendonosis
Anyone heard of tendonosis...no not tendonitis. Apparently it's damage to the tendon cells due to lack of blood flow(???)
Our 10K last Saturday was sponsored by the local PT. He noticed after the race that I was favoring/rubbing my right leg and suggested that I let him take a look at it. I dropped by and he took a look...for free. Diagnosis is tendonosis where the hamstring attaches to the sit bone. I've had pain in that area for probably 30 years off and on. It's worst when I sit...driving, flying on a plane. Running seems to aggravate it slightly and I can feel it as I get farther into a long run but I've never been able to really figure out what causes it to flare up.
He showed me how to massage it and suggested I try that for relief but warned me to be cautious and quit if it gets worse. He doesn't want to mess with it before my marathon as I'm running OK...it's the sitting that is painful. We'll discuss possible treatment after the marathon.

Re: tendonosis
LOL funny that you just mentioned that today because I have done a lot reading about it and the difference from tendonitis for my achilles the past week. Interesting that you mention it for the hamstring, I have had off and on issues in the same area were my hamstring seems to attach to the good old butt. Thanks for sharing now I have a starting point with that area with my doctor to look into further options. Need to take care of before it gets to the point to where yours is.

Re: tendonosis
I suffered from the same thing for years. I had dry needling done to get rid of the tightness in the area and then adopted many glute strengthening exercises which have kept any pain at bay
Re: tendonosis
I had chronic hurts-to-sit pain in that area that ended up being diagnosed not as tendonosis, but a constant spasm of a small internal hip muscle called the gemellus. My PT used a passive release technique to shut the spam down and gave me a bunch of glute exercises to deal with hip instability caused by a muscle imbalance. That may not be your problem, but it's possible.

I'll learn more after my marathon and will let you know if I learn anything that I think would be helpful.Schuey wrote:LOL funny that you just mentioned that today because I have done a lot reading about it and the difference from tendonitis for my achilles the past week. Re: tendonosis
Thanks Mark and Michele...the PT wants to do more to confirm the diagnosis after the marathon and he mentioned glute issues so we'll take a good look then. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: tendonosis
It might be too close to the race, but you *might* want to experiment with some piriformis stretches to see if that helps things loosen up. It may not hit the exact area, but it might ease up tension in the general area.nkrichards wrote:Thanks Mark and Michele...the PT wants to do more to confirm the diagnosis after the marathon and he mentioned glute issues so we'll take a good look then. Re: tendonosis
Thanks Mark...I do some light stretches most nights and I did add a piriformis stretch last night but I kept it pretty easy. We're trying to limit my time on the tractor as much as possible for the next couple weeks as well.Mark B wrote:It might be too close to the race, but you *might* want to experiment with some piriformis stretches to see if that helps things loosen up.
