So glad you have photo evidence because otherwise we'd have simply assumed you were hallucinating out there in the woods. Very Happy

I am scheduled to do 18 on Thursday and 14 on Friday and I may still do that - but at least one day will be tough hill hiking, not running much.
A running friend ,Bob Siscoe - who was among the small % that finished the IT 100 last year - contacted me today.
He is off on Monday and wanted to do 30 miles with me - and I jumped for it. It will get up to 50 degrees!
We decided to meet at Brown County Park - where I did 16 last week - plus an ankle roll.
Ben (who I did BC Park with last week) is joining us and maybe some others.
I will do a better job of taping my ankle this time.

Then on March 22, Bob and I plan on meeting at the IT 100 route and do 2-3 loops.
Bob and I are more of the same sluggard speed, than Ben.
The race is coming up fast and these last long runs are so important.
And these tough hikes will be essential for me.
Now if we can just get decent weather this year!

Since I may be doing up to 30 miles on Monday, I felt I needed to alter my schedule some.
Yesterday, I went to the Jackson-Washington Forestry to do more hill work.
For me, anyway, I decided to do some non-stop hiking on some of the steep hills out there.
The trails were still 95% snow-covered, so running would not be wise with my still-sore ankle.
I did use regular athletic tape to stabilize the ankle and that really helped.

Just a beautiful day out there - not a ton of miles, but a great workout.
And I almost got the car stuck when leaving! With the 50's the next few days, the snow will be gone fast!

Trails around the area - Brown County - Morgan-Monroe, etc. are a muddy mess. The trails are thawing out and any traffic - feet or bikes - can do some real damage. My friends Bob and Ben want to do a long run - up to 30 miles on Monday. I was thinking that the forestry would be a muddy mess after the other day.

So . . . I drove over to Vallonia and the Starve Hollow SRA and ran/hiked the Turkey Roost trail - 7.1 miles of double track - up and down ridges or knobs. Most very runnable with a few killer hills. The ridges are exposed to the sun - for the most part - and have already thawed out and have very little mud. I took photos and some video for Bob and Ben and decided this is the place for Monday's long day. I think we will do 4 loops or so.'

Here are some maps, photos and, OF COURSE, another Charles video. Calm down! Laughing

Pretty area, Charles! And yes, I appreciated the few switchbacks they had at Tecumseh. I kinda wish they had some on that road going up Indian Hill...  What a Face

Your Turkey Roost route looks pretty sweet, too. I'd love to see what those areas look like with leaves on the trees -- I've only seem them bare!

Enjoy the thaw! Looks like a very pretty area.  Hope the 30 miler goes well. I thought of you on some of my TM runs this winter. I don't know how you do it but it's great! I felt like I ran 12 miles after my 6 miler TM, just with the mental focus it took to stay with it.

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .

Post  charles.moman on Tue Mar 11, 2014 2:00 am

Well . .  Dot - here is another one.
I woke up at 1:30 AM - not because I was hurting or sore - I was just still plain thirsty.
I let myself get a little dehydrated on my 31-miler with my friends, Ben and Bob.
Bob and I planned on doing some running together this winter, but it just never worked out.
He lives in Spencer - on the other side of Bloomington and just turned 60 - I am 62.5.
He was one of the 30% that finished the Indiana Trail 100 last year in horrible conditions.
Ben and I recently did a frigid 16-miler at Brown County Park.
Last year, Ben dropped at 50 miles at the IT 100.

Bob contacted me last week and said he needed a 30-miler and had a vacation day he had to use or lose this week.
It worked out perfectly for us - even though I was not scheduled for a 30-miler right now.
We started at 8:00 AM and it was in the upper 30s, but it felt a little colder with some wind at times.
They had never been on this trail, but soon believed me about some serious hills - serious.
We ran/power hiked 4 loops of 7.1 miles, plus an extra side trail to end up with a 50K.
My ankle was starting to hurt at the end of the 3rd loop and I considered stopping, but quickly changed my mind.
I took the Hoka Stinsons off and put on my Adidas fastpacking hiking/trail running shoes to hold the ankle better and it turned it all around for me.

I taped my left ankle with athletic tape to be more secure and that worked so well - Kenesio tape would not have been enough.
A hard, but fun day with two good friends - they are both staying in our cabin at Chain 'O Lakes.
I think it was 60 or so when we finished - just beautiful. We even saw a bald eagle very close to us at one point and the spring peepers were loud and clear. On March 22, Bob and I hope (if the trails are decent) to do 50 miles at Chain 'O Lakes.
And we might do a night time run over at Low Gap in Morgan Monroe - not possible now there because it is a deep muddy mess.

Well . . . Chain 'O Lakes trails are still under snow, but melting. The RD wants people off the trails until the snow is gone, they are thawed out and dry. So Bob and I are not going there this weekend for a 50-mile training run.

Instead, we are going to Morgan-Monroe Forest tomorrow for a 12-hour run starting at noon.
We will use two trails that are both 10 miles - Low Gap and Three Lakes.
We have 3 others joining us - a couple - Mary and her BF and Sherry.
Sherry is slow like Bob and me and she is staying until 6 PM.
Mary is much faster and I think she and her BF will not actually stay with us, but they plan on going to midnight, like us.

So the plan is to get at least 40 miles and maybe more before heading out.
I would like to get 50, but we will see.
I need to get home in time for Susie to leave for church - I will likely skip this Sunday.
I will have a 1.5 hour drive back home - probably stop for coffee and maybe a quick bite in Martinsville.
This is our last really long run before the race - coming up in 5 weeks.

In case it gets lost in the system, Charles, here's my feeble attempt to match one of your run video blogs.

As you can see, we need someone with your skills back out running and recording, pronto! Heal well.

I am at Columbus Regional Rehab. I am a severely injured trail runner, with a strong mindset. because I was prepping for a 100-miler, I have been killing my core, arms, shoulders, etc. plus tons of hours on my feet. I was ready  - I would have finished.  Little did I know, I was training for a T-bone accident with critical and near death injuries. I have a long road ahead - more continued pain and work, but I will recover fully. Thank you so much for your love and concern. I may be home by Thursday after the mods are ready. Then a long rehab with my eye on the prize. Thank you Jesus for your mercy.

Sorry - no video yet. But you all KNOW one is coming. Smile

Re: Slowly Going Somewhere . . .

Post  charles.moman on Thu Apr 17, 2014 5:57 am

We shot photos of anything that was damaged in the accident.
Here are photos of my running gear that got cut off of me on March 23.
I have been finding great deals and have replaced most of these items.
I discovered a place - 6pm.com - an outlet of Zappos that has great prices.
It is about an hour or so away from near Louisville - I will go there sometime.
Yes, I will be making some short videos - just been too tired to do it.
I thought I did not need the pain meds and found out that I do need them, but at a lower level.
We have split up the pills in half and spread out doses so I am not so stoned - well, not stoned at all now.

We are now in the daily grind phase of this - not complaining mind you.
It is the sleeping issues because I cannot sleep in bed - I am a side sleeper and the pelvic fractures say "no" at the moment.
But that will go away eventually.
The ribs have been killing me when using the walker - BUT I am SO glad to have a strong core.
My core is getting me around and I can't imagine dealing with this a year ago or earlier.
I am doing my exercises, but need to step it up now - and I can because with less pain meds, I am not so sleepy.
However, it does not take too much to wipe me out - but that will get better.
I like going out to the store or my old school, but boy do I feel it later.

I treated myself to an Apple TV for my office - LOVE it!
Last night I ordered a new 27-inch Dell monitor, because my current is getting ready to die - nice red lines up and down.
I had 2 Dells, but one died a few months ago and now my second.
Hopefully when all of this is over, I will be getting an all new Mac system and get back to 2 screens.
After a few things, like writing a journal about my experiences so far, for my lawyer - I will finally get back to composing my one-man Indiana bicentennial show. Next fall, I will start doing preview shows and really start booking the show in 2015.
I can't wait to start touring with the show.
