Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
You're right that its a big drop. Its tempting to go for it, given your apparent conditioning, and knowing that "next time" doesn't always come when you expect it. One way you might think about looking at it - if you run somewhat conservatively for whatever reason up in NH and you feel at the end like you've left a lot on the table, you could run just the marathon 5 weeks later, rather than the whole challenge, and you could be more aggressive in that race, knowing that you felt like you could have gone even faster in this one. I have gone into marathons thinking I could drop a fair amount of time based on intervening intermediate distance race results, and then fell wildly short, so I understand where you're coming from...

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
yeah hopefully a good rain comes and clears it all out before the race. But whatever happens, be smart and if you have to slow down then just do it and be careful.

Oh, I've done Clarence DeMar - fun little race. I hope that things are too washed out in Keene and that the rain stops before I get to Falmouth (tomorrow - wishful thinking, I know).

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
Well I did the best I had in me considering the not exactly marathon weather. 3:33:51. Old PR 3:51. I passed a lot of people walking those last few miles due to the weather. After about 24 I had nothing more in me and took all I had just to keep running. When I finished they had to help walk me a bit because I could barely stand. I had nothing left. Overall I'm pleased. I think with better conditions I could have threatened sub 3:30. Oh well out of my control. Great race and course by the way. Only about 200 ran. I placed 29 but not sure how many total as I left.
I'll put up a report later. Now I just want to chill out. Oh and despite loads of Body Glide I got some major rashes where you don't want them. I jumped when I hit the shower.

Wow, way to smash your old PR even if non marathon weather.
I hate that chafing in the shower feeling.

Fantastic job Alex! The weather is certainly a factor but that's a great time in spite of it.

We all know you have faster time in you. Weather changes everything you can't control it but only respond to it. You did just that with a huge PR. Awesone job!

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
Thanks everyone. Until you actually run it you just never know if a big time goal you shoot for can happen. This is where the mental side really comes into play too. During those last 5-6 everything was telling me to ease off, but I just kept reminding myself how hard I trained for this. Finally my body did kind of shut down with 2 to go, but I still mentally pressed and didn't bleed too much away.
The plan was to run about 5 tomorrow but we'll see how I feel as I'm still pretty worn down from the race.

Your body needs rest. Take more days off.

Yeah , give it another day if you can. I like to take at least 3 days off after a marathon or I end up injured.

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
Thanks Julie and Michael I did take an extra day.
Thursday - 5M Recovery. As I flip the page to my two day race now I did my first run since the race Sunday. It was nice getting back out there. Went nice and slow but I was starting to feel my quads by the end.
Tomorrow I'll probably put the bike on the trainer and ride for a bit. Saturday I'll do 6 and Sunday 8.

Hey Alex I wanted to let you know that I read your race report and I want to say congrats.
You ran a great race and gave it 100% and that is all you can ask of yourself and congrats on the PR! Tough conditions and you just keep going, see the summer training paid off and it shows how good your fitness is .

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
Thanks again Martin.
Friday - Biked on my trainer for close to an hour.
Saturday - 6M. Recovery. Could still feel it a bit. It was just nice to be out there.
Sunday - 8M GA. This was the first with a little bit of pace behind it. It was on the slower side of GA but it felt nice.
Monday - Biked on the trainer again for about an hour.
Tomorrow will be 6 easy. Just trying to get recovered with hopes of about one good week of training next week before I taper.

Re: Part 1 of 3 parts to BQ
Julie, I'm doing a 2 day race at the end of the month. It's a half marathon on Saturday and full marathon on Sunday. I haven't trained specifically for it so I'm just doing it for fun and hope that my current fitness will let me complete it.
