First 5 km ?!
Hello guys ! I'm Daphne and I'm new here. Nice to meet you all !
Unfortunately I'm not a hardcore runner. Just a confused jogger but I'm getting there ! Anyways, I'm joining this charity run this 8th of June and I was wondering what tips I could get to pull through this 5 km. Any specific things to eat especially when we have to wake up at 4 am in the morning ? Any special warm outs before the run?
Thank you for the replies and I'm happy I joined !

Re: First 5 km ?!
Few things are as confusing as running. It seems to be a simple concept...left, right, repeat. Welcome to the boards, by the way!
If you can run or run/walk a 5Km at ANY pace, you shouldn't need anything special to eat. Just something that you would normally eat for breakfast is fine. If it's going to be hotter than when you normally run, a little extra water before the run is fine, then after the race, be sure to replenish.
Good luck!

Re: First 5 km ?!
Hi Daphne! Welcome.
If you're confused, you're in good company here. We're all trying to figure out what works best for us.
I'm guessing the race is at 7 or 8 in the morning, so a regular breakfast at 4 a.m. sounds fine. Get to the race site in time to use the porta-potty, though.
A little jogging before the race can help, with some accelerations up to your expected race pace if you're feeling ambitious. Other than that, stay loose and excited and enjoy the experience.
As far as the race itself goes, the most important thing to remember is to not get carried away with excitement and take off like you're running a 100-yard dash and flame out. It happens more often than you'd think.
Have a great race!

Take it slow and enjoy it. Don't drink too many fluids right before the race or you could be quite uncomfortable.

Re: First 5 km ?!
Welcome! The best things you can do are go as slow as you want, including walking if you feel like it, and have fun! Charity 5ks will almost always have a lot of people there just to enjoy themselves and who will not be trying to run fast or anything. So just do your own thing and enjoy yourself! As for food, I like to eat something light, like a bagel and banana a good 2 hours before a race or not at all (early morning ones I sometimes just wait until after) and I always make sure to use the porta potty about 20 minutes before. You can walk or jog a bit to warm up if you like. I usually do a bit of jogging and then some light stretching.Daphne Dado wrote:Hello guys ! I'm Daphne and I'm new here. Nice to meet you all !

Hello Jim, well it wasn't bad but I didn't really get to run that much because my running partner had pains at her sides. So I didn't really want to leave her alone and make her hate me forever.

Good decision. A really good friend will be around longer than your ability to run. There will be other races.

You can always sign up for another 5K and run it more. Side stitches are no fun and the more you run the less likely you are to get them.
