Two very nice runs, Ounce! I think a 12:50 pace is quite reasonable. You may even want to consider the possibility that you could pick up the pace a little in the last 10K of the race if everything feels good.

You can bill me for the comment.

BTW, it is my humble opinion that you're allowed to call 36 degrees "cold." If you can die of hypothermia outside, it's cold.

Now, what they're experiencing up north adds frostbite to the mix and is more along the lines of "frigid" and "bitter cold."

Thanks, Mark.  I see the other end of the thermometer more frequently as I think it's 'warm' up to 93 degrees, then magically 94 is 'hot.'

As far as Sunday's upcoming weather, the north wind will turn southerly late Friday.  This will mean humidity and rising temperatures for Sunday to the tune of a low 50's at the start and low 60's at the finish.  We haven't seen 50 degrees for a high in a week and won't until Thursday.  At least I won't be overdressed at the start.  Comparatively, the 30K race in December had 60 degrees at the start of the race.

I still think the 12:50 is the pace for miles 3-20.  I know I'll have to fight my body and/or mind to do that.  I think that I can win that battle.  An official finish is the supreme goal, which gives me huge negotiating points to win the mind game because if I do 12:50 to mile 20, then I can do 16 minute miles for the final 10K to get an official finish.  It'll be a quid pro quo kind of mind game.

Hope you get the weather that you're hoping for and are comfortable running in.  I much prefer running in cold weather...30's and low 40's are great...but that may be colder than you like.

Marathons are always a mind game...play it well on Sunday.  Enjoy!

Jeez, Miche1e, thanks.

My bib number is 12426.  I haven't decided whether to have the splits done on Facebook or not.

I'll be running in the morning somewhere between 3-5 miles.  I was going to run this morning, but it was raining and it's not going to be raining on Sunday.

The temperature spread is supposed to be 50 at the start and 64 at the finish.  A local TV meteorologist who is running the marathon did the Sunday temperature spread for the 6 p.m. news.  Partly cloudy skies and the wind direction has flipped to out of the north at 5-10 mph.  Can you say 'lower humidity?'  I knew you could.

I'm going to be traveling on Sunday so won't be able to follow the race live but I'll definitely be thinking of you.  I'll be off the grid for a few days after that but will be checking in as soon as I can.

Good luck.  Run your race...remember it's largely mental...and don't forget to have fun!!

Embarassed Hmmm. Thanks, Nancy.  I hope your traveling has a relaxing theme and purpose.  The fun will be in the bib.  And I'll try to post a picture of it before the race.

Especially in Houston, Mark.  And much to my surprise, forecast figures indicate a dry line will be coming through Saturday night so that not only do we get lower humidity, but we get lower temperatures, to boot.  Now, it's supposed to be 47 at the start and 62 at the 'hottest' part of the day.  Which should be helpful to offset the mostly sunny skies (maybe some of the high clouds to diffuse) with 10 mile north wind.  A north wind on the Houston course becomes a headwind from about miles 13.5 to 16.  This weather is seasonally average for Houston, although the low would need to be 43 to be exactly seasonal.

-30-

Wednesday, I ran about 3 miles in this, the last week of taper.  This week, I've been very lazy about when to run.  Sleep is nice, but a couple of non-running things have been disturbing my slumber.  Like now.  It's 35 degrees as I type this because we FINALLY got some sun for the first time in about 10 or more days, which is also normal due to a Pacific jet stream that brings the moisture and the clouds across Mexico looking for a trigger to rain.  Last weekend, it was rainy and 40's, so the Houston Marathon people must've been making their good weather bribery payments on time.

Wednesday afternoon, it was 42 degrees, cloudy, and misty.  I was toasty, but not overly so, in my clothing selection and wouldn't have known about the persistent mist, had I not seen the windshield wipers on the cars going.

2.94 miles, 37.22, 12:42 pace, 152 avg bpm, 165 max bpm during mile 1, 166 avg cadence, 0.76 m average stride length.
1.  12.29, 153 bpm, 166 spm, 78 sl
2.  12.49, 149 bpm, 165 spm, 76 sl
3.  12.48 pace, 153 bpm, 167 spm, 75 sl

I was trying to run a 12:50 pace that I'll be employing on Sunday.

Would it be acceptable to target 12:50 +/- 5 seconds without screwing the pooch too much for 26 miles?

Miche1e, the registration for the 2016 race starts on Sunday afternoon.  You may not have to because you might qualify as Elite, but forgive me for not checking what the time standards are.  The press release from December 1 explains the process for mortals here:  http://www.365runners.com/t2893-2016-houston-marathon-increases-field

Thanks for the well wishes.  Back to bed.

This morning, I ran 3 miles at a faster pace than before.  I just wanted to see how the legs reacted and to clear out some trash in the legs.  It was 33 degrees and calm winds.

2.96 miles, 34:19, 11:36 pace, 152 avg bpm, 165 max bpm during mile 3, 168 avg cadence, 0.82 m avg stride length.
1.  11:43, 147 bpm, 166 spm, 83 sl
2.  11:28, 151 bpm, 168 spm, 83 sl
3.  11:36 pace, 158 bpm, 171 spm, 81 sl

Well, the pace on these 3 sure isn't marathon pace.  I couldn't maintain THAT pace on Sunday.  But it felt fine, although a little winded.

Off to the Expo and dinner with a friend.

Good luck, Mr. NAKED! Hope you get a lot of shout-outs on the race, and that it all turns out well for you.

+/- 5 seconds on pace is okay, but don't push it much beyond that, especially at the start.

Thanks, Mark.  5:45 would be good, but anything under 6:00:xx is the goal.  Sunny skies with 43 at the start and 61 at the end with north winds 5-10.

Let's see what happens.  Nighty night.

Short synopsis.  Yes.  I was hurting after the 30K split.  My left foot might have been on cambered roads too much and the lateral underside was hurting and it was numb from the ball of the foot forward.  The numbness didn't bug me so much because it didn't hurt.  My shoes had about 35 miles on them.

My objective was to get to mile 23 under 13 pace.  After seeing how much I overran the course per the Garmin, 26.49 miles vs 26.2 miles, I may have been over 13 pace, but the Garmin said I was under and I went with that.  If I could get to 23 under 13, then I knew that I could walk 3.2 miles at a 19 minute pace, if the pain was too much.

At 5K - 12:48 pace
At 10K - 12:46 pace
At 15K - 12:53 pace
At Half - 12:52 pace
At 25K - 12:53 pace
At 30K - 12:50 pace
At 35K - 12:59 pace
at 40K - 13:17 pace
At Finish - 13:20 pace

GarminConnect isn't uploading data, right now, so I can't look at the splits.

Aside from the foot, the rest of the body performed exceptionally.  The hamstring only whined twice around mile 7, otherwise NOTHING.  I spent about 15 minutes stretching before the race.

The weather was very nice.  The sun came out around the Half for good, but there was enough of a cool breeze to negate the effects of the sun.  I wore my Texas Buff the whole race.  http://www.buffusa.com/sports/collections/original-buff-reg/styles/original-buff-texas-star

And the 'Naked" got some good responses and a LOT of quiet from people that would say "Go Bob!" for the person in front of me.  Suspect

Overall, I was really pleased with the run.  I drank water every water stop and had 4 S!Caps.  I took three of them before mile 18 and the last one after the race.

Thanks for all of the encouragement.  I thought I could finish the marathon in the time allotted, but there's always that nasty voice in my head.  Quite frankly, I was trying to run a consistent race like Miche1e ran at Boston, back in April.

Now, to go take a shower and find all those lovely chafed locations! affraid

Post  ounce Mon Jan 19, 2015 2:41 pm

This morning, I had the usual stiffness with a very pissed off (read overused) hamstring.  I found it humorous that today is the beginning of the 2016 running year.  19 days into 2015 and I'm living in 2016's running year.  So much for getting deep. Shocked

As promised, below are the splits from yesterday's marathon.  I found that I could throttle by time by moderating the cadence.  If I maintained a 167, then I could do some 12:30 splits.  But I was afraid of burning out too soon.  I've done it before.

26.49 miles, 5:49:28 (official), 13:20 pace (official), 156 avg bpm, 172 max bpm during mile 13, 161 avg cadence, 0.76 m  average stride length, 1st half pace 12:52 (official), 2nd half pace 13:48.
1.  12:43, 150 bpm, 167 spm, 76 sl
2.  12:46, 147 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
3.  12:37, 149 bpm, 166 spm, 77 sl
4.  12:27, 151 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
5.  12:41, 151 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
6.  12:49, 151 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
7.  12:29, 152 bpm, 167 spm, 77 sl
8.  13:40, 151 bpm, 157 spm, 75 sl (pee break)
9.  12:40, 155 bpm, 167 spm, 76 sl
10. 12:43, 157 bpm, 167 spm, 76 sl
11. 12:46, 159 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
12. 12:40, 161 bpm, 167 spm, 76 sl
13. 12:45, 161 bpm, 165 spm, 76 sl
14. 12:46, 162 bpm, 166 spm, 76 sl
15. 12:37, 164 bpm, 167 spm, 77 sl
16. 13:01, 165 bpm, 167 spm, 74 sl
17. 12:35, 165 bpm, 166 spm, 77 sl
18. 12:42, 160 bpm, 165 spm, 77 sl
19. 12:55, 160 bpm, 160 spm, 78 sl
20. 12:55, 161 bpm, 166 spm, 75 sl
21. 13:32, 162 bpm, 159 spm, 75 sl
22. 14:31, 159 bpm, 154 spm, 72 sl
23. 13:53, 158 bpm, 164 spm, 71 sl
24. 15:47, 152 bpm, 134 spm, 76 sl
25. 15:42, 151 bpm, 136 spm, 76 sl
26. 14:33, 151 bpm, 149 spm, 74 sl
balance 12.04 pace, 155 bpm, 158 spm, 84 sl

The satellite providing measurement of miles to the 220 is really sad.  I was concentrating very hard on keeping a straight line.  Keeping the tangents, EVEN when I was tired and my feet HURT, I ran the tangents.  Damn that 220.

Since I was aiming for a 30 minute PR from last year's 5:24 PR, I don't think it's a bad thing to set a target for 2016 of 1 hour better than yesterday.  Maybe more!  My thanks to y'all for showing interest in the journey and answering my questions.  Thanks.
