when to replace minimalistic shoes? Empty when to replace minimalistic shoes?

I use Nike 3.0 free. There's a lot of conflicting advice on when to replace old pair for a new one. When do you guys feel a need to change? Do you keep a log and track miles until you reach a threshold? or Just buy a new one after every couple of months, no matter how many miles you put on ? A website said to change after 200 miles. That what, like 3 months? thats it? If this is true i'd have to go back to cushiony shoes, coz honestly i cant afford to get a new pair after every 3 month.

And also, even if do go over the "so called threshold limit", will i get injured? Coz from what i understand, if the sole ( what little i do have on my minimalistic shoes) does breakdown, that only means my feet will have work harder, get stronger in the process. I've read numerous reports of the benefits of barefoot running. And heard about marathoners who are putting miles way over the 200 miles point running on shoes with practically no soles.

Welcome to the boards.

Replacing minimal shoes follows the same general rules of thumb as non-minimal shoes.  If they start acting different or hurting when they didn't hurt before, it's time to replace.  I've never worn racing flats, so I don't know if it works for them, as well.

In addition to what Oz said, I'm seeing that the 3.0 Free (Flyknit) has a 21mm heel and 17mm toe.  That's still pretty beefy, despite being close to 0 drop.  I wouldn't be surprised if you got at least 500-700 miles on them, depending on how "soft" you run.

You shouldn't need to replace minimalist footwear every 200 miles. Unless you're wearing down the soles in manner that throws off your landing, all extended use will do is compress the midsole material of the shoe and lessen the cushioning underfoot. That will actually help you learn to run lighter on your feet, which is a very good thing. Since you're already in a Free 3.0, it's not going to be a big difference.

Everybody is different, but I agree with Mike that an average runner could easily get 500-700 miles in those types of shoes. If you start to notice one side worn down significantly more than the other -- or if you start developing weird pains in your ankles, knees or hips -- getting fresh shoes might be a good first thing to do.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
