Kinvara 8 toe joint issues

Post  lemon_grassacdacd on Sun May 14, 2017 2:49 pm

Hello All-- I just got a new pair of Kinvara 8's and noticed at the end of my first with run the bottom of my right foot (the ball below my big toe was hurting). It wasn't anything too major and was only on one side. Anyway, the strange thing is after I stop running the pain went away almost immediately, however the top of my big toe joint started to cause some irritation and had the sensation of wanting to be cracked back into place constantly.

I've never had this issue with any running shoe before with any type of drop either.

I was running in a brooks glycerin 12 (10mm drop) and my current trail shoe is a saucony peregrine (4mm drop).

The only thing I can think of is possibly the toe box is too narrow ( comparatively speaking to the shoes I normally run in) and possibly pushing my bunion/toe out of line?

Any thoughts?

Side note-- this happened on my second run as well so I've decided to take 3 days off.

Welcome to the Boards!

The Kinvara 7 ran a bit short to the true size, meaning get a 12-1/2 if you usually wear a 12 and comments on the new Kinvara 8 on runningwarehouse.com are saying the same thing.  So, I'd recommend going up a 1/2 size and see where that takes you.

I started wearing the Kinvara 4, then the 5, skipped the 6 because it was supposed to be so bad, and now I'm in 7's at a 1/2 size bigger than the 4 or 5.  I won't buy the 8's until I can't buy the 7's anymore or when the 8's drop in price for the 9's, next year.

I haven't seen any issue with how the 4, 5, or 7 feels.  I also have a pair of Peregrine 4, as well.  Love the grip of that shoe.  HTH.

Hello, thanks for the reply -- I did size up as I went to a local shoe store and tried on my normal size which was too small so I sized up.

Welcome to the boards!

It sounds quite likely that the toe box is too small on those Kinvaras. I'd suggest taking them back to the shoe store and talking with the folks there about it. If they're a good shop, they'll let you exchange them for something that fits you better. You won't want to wear shoes that hurt your feet.
