What better way to start a new year and set new goals than a new blog?

This year will be about finding purpose, a better life balance and motivation to be a better me...and I plan to have fun doing it!

I'll participate in my regular events...

  • Feb 16, Heartbreaker Half
  • July 4, Todd Beamer 10K
  • Sept 12, MAC Dash

I'll add...

  • Mar 14, Shamrock 5K with Owen (grandson)
  • May 16, Pole Pedal Paddle
  • Oct 18, Columbia Gorge Half

I'll take the time to...

  • Travel to Puerto-Vallarta for boot-camp with Katie in late January/early Feb
  • Spend a weekend at the Oregon Coast with Mom and Katie in June.  (Dinner on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad and Oregon Coast Railriders)
  • Take Abby on her 12 year trip in August (Oregon Caves, Redwoods, Crater Lake...she wants to sleep in a tree house)

Here's the interesting part...the Pole Peddle Paddle requires me to learn to downhill ski...hence sliding toward my goals.  I've signed up for ski lessons.  I'll also need to improve my cross country skiing and my paddling skills.  And keep up my running and biking fitness.  Good thing I love a good challenge.

While learning those new skills I want to keep up with the things I'm already doing...swimming, strength and running.  My plan will be tentative/flexible while I see how this goes.  I may have to alter plans to work around the weather on the mountain but I'd like to try to...

  • Swim 2-3 times per week (increasing to 3 after the PPP)
  • Run 3 times per week (increasing to 4-5 after the PPP)
  • Bike once a week (increasing to twice after the PPP)
  • Strength/Core work with Marty 6 times per week (decreasing to 3 when we start irrigating)
  • Get up on the mountain at least once a week and twice if possible as I learn to downhill ski and practice cross country skiing.
  • Find a way to practice paddling on the race course at least 3-4 times before the PPP.

So...I signed up for ski lessons and bought some ski clothes.
I registered for the Heartbreaker Half.
We did our strength/core work yesterday and today.
I ran yesterday (4 miles) and will run later today.
Here I come 2020.   Ride

Sounds like a fun year.  Too bad my ski stuff is all in Cleveland as I could have sent it to you.  Good luck learning to ski - it's something I gave up over the last couple of years.

Goals look good!  I bet that half in October is beautiful - makes me wish the west coast wasn't so far away.

Happy New Year, Nancy.  Well, you're not slacking for '20, that's for sure.  In the other blog, your 5K and 500 yards was probably encouraging as you get into this year.  Good job.

It'll be warm in Puerto Vallarta from your point of view.  No chance of a hurricane in late Jan/early Feb.

Enjoy!

Thanks for dropping in Michele.

We'll see how the skiing goes.  If I don't feel I can make it down the run safely then I'll take one of the many offers that I've received to form a team and let someone else ski.  I'm sure you of all people understand my desire to do the full race as an individual if I can do it safely.

Yes, the Columbia Gorge Half looks like a beautiful coarse.  It's also very difficult...part of the reason that I chose it.  I tend to pick events with the potential for a fast run and then concentrate on my time and forget to enjoy both the training and the race.  A PR half won't be in the cards for this race so my goal is to enjoy the day and bring the fun back into running

Yes Doug, even though my run and swim times in the Freeze your Fanny weren't impressive at all they were still a pleasant surprise and hence encouraging.

I'm looking forward to the Puerto Vallarta trip.  It may be hard to find a safe place to run but we'll keep active with boot camp and yoga every day.  We're looking at activities that we can do while we're there.  I want to make sure that I get to snorkel a couple times, maybe try a short open water swim if it isn't to rough, and I might be able to get in a bit of paddling practice as well.

***

There is a lot of days left in 2020 but so far so good.

  • Marty and I have been consistent with our core/strength workouts since Christmas Eve day.  Natalie is starting a new BOD challenge group tomorrow.  We're going to join in.
  • We had a great swim on Friday.  I was struggling a bit so I let Janice set the pace and she did well.  We initially aimed for a mile but Janice changed our goal to 2000 yards and we all did it!  In 2018 I swam 2.3 times per week and averaged 2036 yards per session.  In 2019 I only swam 2 times per week and averaged 1639 yards.  We've decided to try and average over 2000 yards in 2020 and plan to contact our old coach, Tim, and ask if he'd be willing to put together a few workouts for us.
  • Here's my runs this year...nothing spectacular but it's a start

  1. 4 miles @11:40 HR 153
  2. 4 miles @11:40 HR 150
  3. 3 miles @12:06 HR 145
  4. 5 miles planned for this afternoon

  • I think if I'm going to get on the bike this winter it's going to have to be indoors.  I need to set up my bike on the trainer even if it is in the way. (the garage is to cold and to boring so I'll set it up in the dining room so I can see the TV)
  • Ski lessons start next week.  Shocked

And life goes on...

When I saw this my first thought was...Oh, Michele you just don't realize where I'm at right now.  And while I still think that, I do appreciate the suggestion.  It sounds like it might actually be a very good choice for me.  Easy to travel to.  Not a bad time of year...it's one week after the MAC Dash but that's just a sprint distance and I could just take it easy.  I'm not sure I could make it work this year but it's definitely piqued my interest.  Might just be in my future...who knows.

And Doug...would you fly up for a 365 get-together if Mark participated?

***

So I did run my planned 5 miles on Saturday afternoon.  @ 11:53  HR 143  Managed my HR a bit better on this run but boy do I have a long road ahead of me to gain back my base...and my confidence.

Sunday we did the sample workout for Natalie's new couples challenge.  The program is called 6 Weeks of Work.  It's a significant increase in intensity.  Marty and I did the fitness test on Saturday...and failed but not by a lot.  After doing the sample workout we decided to drop down to 4 Weeks of Prep before jumping into 6 Weeks of Work.  After doing the Prep workouts yesterday and today I think we made a very good decision.  Natalie forgets that we're old.   Laughing  I will say that we're enjoying the Beachbody workouts.  I didn't think I would and never expected Marty to jump on board like he has.  Even though I need to alter my schedule to workout with him I enjoy doing it together and he keeps me motivated.  We're finding them to be a really good mix of core/strength/cardio/balance.  There are so many to choose from that it's easy to find something that is the appropriate level and that we enjoy.  I work harder when someone plans my workout for me and also enjoy the variety.

Monday was Beachbody followed by a nice 2050 yard swim.  I planned on a short run but quickly realized that I was asking to much of this old body.

Today was Beachbody (leg workout) followed by a 4 mile run.  @12:12 HR 146  Even though I slowed the pace it was still a tough run and the HR showed that.

Don't laugh to hard but I'm going to sign off and see if I can get a few Christmas letters in the mail this afternoon...

I can't commit to being able to be there, but I've noted the weekend of the event and will try to work things out.

Does Mark even know how to swim?  Suspect He'll probably do well as he can do it barefoot.

Your year seems to have started out like gangbusters.  Hide as much as you can from Freddy.  He's looking for a job and a bus ticket somewhere.

Great job!

Training update before I provide details of the ski lesson.

Wednesday was a rest day on Natalie's Beachbody challenge.  Marty and I did a yoga workout.  I decided to skip my swim and run a bit longer...my Half is only 5 weeks away.   Shocked  6 miles @ 11:58 HR 149  Slowed a few seconds on the last two miles but overall kept the pace and HR pretty steady.  HR not great but what can I expect after such a long layoff.

Thursday 40 minute Endurance and Agility workout then off the ski lessons.  Details below.

Friday 35 minute "pull" workout.  Chin ups included.  I modified!  Swim friends are out of town so I was on my own.  2300 yards.  I got in some nice endurance work and then finished with intervals.  Nice!

***
Ski lessons were...challenging.  (also fun)  I met another couple while picking up my boots and skis.  They didn't know how to put them on either.  Christine and Mat were in my group.  They are learning to ski to keep up with their 4 year old.  Guessing they are in their late 30s(?).  Christine is a cardiology tech...we had an interesting conversation.  Mat is an endurance swimmer...pool not open water.  He swims in Bend so I won't be seeing him at the pool.  We were joined by Julie...maybe mid 20's.  The other 4 beginners were in a separate group.  Just want to mention that our entire group made way more progress than anyone in that group.  They taught us the important stuff like how to put our skis on and then we slowly learned the skills we would need.  Our instructor, Jeff, was fantastic.  I only fell once...while skiing...but I struggled to get on/off the carpet lift.  Embarassed  Julie was the star of the class.  Christine was a close second.  Mat and I made good progress but we had a tough act to follow.  (Mat fell often but he did master the carpet lift.)  Toward the end of the 2 hour lesson I really started to struggle getting on/off the carpet lift.  I told Jeff that my muscles were just giving out.  He explained that it was probably more mental than physical and that's common when adults...I heard people your age but I think he actually did say adults...learn new challenging skills.  Julie and Christine were ready to give the real lift a try.  I think Jeff figured that Mat and I could survive even though we weren't quite ready.  I opted out.  I was exhausted and felt I was holding the others up.  I only missed out on the last 10 minutes or so.

So I advanced to the second level...nearly made it to the 3rd level but I think Jeff wanted to see me showing a bit more control on my turns...and show ability to get on/off the carpet lift successfully.  Matt got the same grade.  Christine barely made it to the third level but will probably stick with Matt next lesson so they can practice their skills together.  Julie obviously made it to the third level.  It will be interesting to see who's in my group next lesson and what their skills are.

I felt much better once I got my boots off and sat down with a cup of coffee and my lunch.  The drive home seemed long...I was obviously tired.  I went to bed relatively early but felt OK this morning and we did our workout.  Oddly enough I wasn't sore this morning...just still tired.  I think Jeff was correct...it took a lot out of me mentally as much or more than physically.

A big storm is blowing in and I don't want to ski on weekends when it's super crowded.  I'll watch for the best day next week and head back up.

Post  nkrichards Sat Jan 11, 2020 8:04 pm

We got a bit of rain last night but no snow.  It was enough to make the road muddy so I drove to the pavement to start my run.  I dressed for 34 degrees and 15 mph winds.  The wind died down and the sun came out and I was overdressed.

Up early for 35 minutes of Full Body Tempo

5 miles @ 12:22 HR 145

  1. 12:20 HR 135
  2. 12:32 HR 142
  3. 12:25 HR 148
  4. 12:35 HR 149
  5. 11:56 HR 152

I slowed down hoping to keep my HR a bit lower but I think overdressing fowled up that plan.

I'm pretty pooped.  Wondering if I'm going to realistically be able to keep up with this plan...

I'm really struggling...I'm not sure if that means I need to grit my teeth and train harder or take a deep breath and make sure I'm getting the recovery time that I need.  ????????

***

  • Sunday - We did a really good 40 minute Range & Repair workout.  Lots of stretching.  I/we really liked it.  Relaxed the rest of the day with family and church activities.
  • Monday - 35 minute Push/Pull workout followed by a really good swim.  2100 yards with lots of fins/kicking.  I had planned on adding a short recovery type run but wasn't able to fit it in.
  • Tuesday - 30 minute Strength/Power workout.  4 miles @ 12:01 HR 148  I felt like a slug and struggled the entire run.  I just wasn't able to settle in and get comfortable.

I'm having doubts about my ability to run a half on Feb 16th...

I hope to figure out mile split HR.  I notice the back and forth swing of the HR reading during a mile.  Your mile split for 2 at 142 bpm would range from 136-146, I think, averaging the 142.  Overdressing played a role.  When I try to slow down an HR, I have to really slow down if I don't want time to bleed.  It could be that stopping altogether may end up being the most efficient and fastest.

I may experiment on Sunday because I'll need to pee once or twice and the stop will be an indicator not only of how much it goes down, but how fast the HR rises to get back to the pre-pee pace.

I'll see what happens.

Your 5 miles is what I would like to happen (regarding HR) on Sunday for miles 6-10.

When in doubt, rest.  When struggling, rest, then the next day evaluate.  No need to overtrain.

I've found that rest is the biggest component of training, now.  Embrace the rest.

As far as the Half, just do what you can and make sure the doc sees you there.  Hopefully, the weather will cooperate.  I enjoy your skiing lessons story.  Almost had to go fetch my jacket before finishing the story.

And 'rest' doesn't have to be all day, but it could.  Just slip out 1 activity and replace it with rest (and only rest) and see how it goes the next day.  Don't feel guilty that your body needs rest.  The alternative is when your body doesn't want to do a durn thing for a few days.  If you find that your body does best on X hours rest during the day, then that's what you need to give it, unless it's a special occasion and your body will probably go the extra activity for that 1 time.

Think of it as a union/management collective bargaining agreement.

Sliding toward my goals... Empty Re: Sliding toward my goals...

I know you're right Doug...about both the rest and the half.  Thanks for the reminder.  I have a tendency to feel guilty for not trying hard enough and maybe sabotaging my training/goals.

So this was interesting.  I was pretty discouraged after my 4 mile run on Tuesday.  Wednesday rolled around and I knew that I needed to get a run of some sort in.  I had hoped to run 8 and make progress building my mileage for the half.  I wasn't optimistic and it was windy and nasty out there as well.  I finally decided that I needed to just take the first step and adjust my run expectations during the run.  It went well.  I just kept chugging along trying to convince myself that 12 minute miles were just fine.  My one mistake was not taking any water or nutrition...I didn't plan to stay out that long.  As you can see from the stats mile 5 was into a nasty headwind.  The last mile and a half were similar but I finished well all things considered.

8 miles @ 12:09 HR 148

  1. 11:27 HR 146
  2. 12:11 HR 148
  3. 12:01 HR 147
  4. 12:09 HR 149
  5. 12:36 HR 149
  6. 12:09 HR 147
  7. 12:20 HR 149
  8. 12:12 HR 149

Thursday started with 40 minutes of Cardio & Core.  I was kind of thinking a short recovery run would be a good option.  Thanks to Doug's reminder...and input from Marty...I opted to swim instead.  Got in a nice 2100 yards.  Even when I swim hard I find it helps my muscles and joints recover.  Good day.

Friday wasn't great weather for skiing but it was the best day that week so I headed to the mountain...after 40 minutes of Isometrics.  The drive took a bit longer than last week but I arrived just in time to get organized for the 10:00 lesson.  I was the only one in skill level 2 so I ended up with a private lesson.  Very Happy  We did two runs down the longer carpet lift so he could assess my skills.  I stayed upright!  Then we headed for the newly installed baby lift.  I fell getting off the lift the first time as I stood up to late.  Lesson learned.  We made a couple more runs on the baby lift and then headed for the toddler lift...probably equivalent to the bunny hill at most ski areas.  It looked a bit intimidating.  I fell a couple times on the upper part of the run.  It was quite a bit steeper than the baby run.  Stayed upright on my second run.  Third run I fell at the bottom on a flat spot.  Embarassed  Fourth run I fell once.  I could tell I was getting tired.  I suggested that we do one more run and call it a day as I could tell I was really tiring.   We took a different run that ended closer to the lodge and I made it all the way without falling.  He commented that he could tell I was getting tired and wobbly and applauded my decision to acknowledge that and stop before I got hurt.  We ended up stopping about 10 minutes before the lesson officially ended.  I made progress but I have a long way to go to gain the skills needed for the PPP run.  I have 4 months to prepare.

My ribs started to hurt on the drive home.  I think I must have tweaked them on one of my falls.  I didn't notice it at the time.  I had to get some banking done and since I was in town I decided to get my 2nd Shingles vaccination.  I woke up this morning with slightly tender ribs, a sore arm from the vaccination, and just plain tired.  Opted to skip Natalie's Beachbody workout and take a day to rest/recover...thanks again Doug.

Office work today...it's time for year end stuff...

Those are some good split numbers!  Even if you walk the last mile of the Half, you're golden.  I'll be tickled to death if I can produce that HR with your splits +90 seconds each.  And I'm on flat ground!

As much as you do in a day or week, just a little adjustment can help a girl out.

And the muscles used in the snow probably rests something else.  Congratulations and hang in there.  Have fun with YE close and reporting.

I'll have to admit that those splits are pretty disappointing compared to where I was last year.  But it's not last year.  It's this year and this is where I am today.  And...I don't think I was running at that HR last year...probably closer to 160...so that's a good sign.

Marty and I both had some niggles that we were slightly concerned about so we skipped Beachbody on Saturday.  Marty had a long day planned doing some carpentry work for my brother.  I relaxed most of the morning and then spent some time in the office.  It was sunny out and not terribly windy.  I needed a break so I headed out for an easy run.  3.0 miles @ 12:01 HR 145

Sunday we made up the workout we skipped...it was a tough one.  It was a gorgeous day and my ribs seemed to be healing well so I headed out for a 5 mile run @12:06 HR 143.  We had planned on doing the Beachbody recovery/stretching workout that was scheduled for that day before it got to late.  My ribs started to bother me and Marty wasn't feeling great either so we skipped it.

Monday we set the alarm but both still we feeling like we needed some recovery time.  Janice and I planned to swim...fortunately Janice requested an easy 500 yards.  We made it a nice recovery/social swim.  Not sure what's going on with the ribs.  They seemed to be healing nicely until Sunday evening.  Uggh!

Meetings all day tomorrow so the most I'll have time for is Beachbody early morning if we're feeling up to it.

Great analysis in your first paragraph of recognizing where you is, not where you was.  Yeah, poor grammar.
That's not to say you won't get back to last year's splits, but I think you're doing enough other things that this year is the reality because running isn't #1.  And there's nothing wrong with that.  But just think how you're prepping your body, should you want running to be #1 again.

Good to read that you're doing when you can and not when you can't!  Myself, I'm looking forward to my legs telling me to turnaround, like it did in 2018.  We were very much in sync on when to turnaround.

Ribs will heal.  Any history of osteoporosis?

The last activity that I did before the rib pain flared up again was running so I've been hesitant to get out on the road.  It's tough as the Heartbreaker Half is fast approaching and I feel like I need to be spending more time running to prepare for that but if I'm going to be ready for the Pole Pedal Paddle I need to make sure I spend time on the mountain learning to ski.  I appears that I have trouble choosing and prioritizing my goals...

So...I did swim on Monday.  Just 500 yards.  We skipped our Beachbody workouts on Monday and Tuesday.  I was stuck in board meetings all day Tuesday.  YUCK!

Wednesday we did a 35 minute workout but I modified and took it easy on the ribs.  Then I swam 1000 yards with Janice.  Decided not to push my luck so I didn't run.

Thursday we did our early morning workout and then I headed for the mountain.  Weather was iffy but it was the best option this week.  Turned into a decent day.  They moved me into a longer ski and the snow was a bit faster than last week so my first run was awkward.  I survived a pretty nasty fall.  I had an older...61 years...instructor.  He was very patient and very attentive to details.  It took some time but he was able to explain some of the reasons I was having trouble and we figured out how to convince my body to do what he...and my mind...said it should.  I was a bit discouraged after my lesson last week but really felt like I made significant progress this week.  I'm still on the bunny hill...but getting close to trying a longer run.  I still feel awkward and have to really concentrate and think about every turn but the turns are starting to come together better.  I stopped for a break and ate my sandwich after the lesson and then went back out and did 4 more runs on my own.  I fell on the last run but got up and got going again without any trouble.  I'm making progress.  The ribs did get a bit sore though...

Up early this morning for our workout.  I had to modify a couple moves to avoid further aggravating the ribs but it felt OK for the most part.  Janice decided to skip swimming as she's not feeling well.  I decided to use this morning to catch up on a few things and then I'll try a run later today.

Still sliding...

Better, though.  Better.  Your tribulations remind me of learning to drive and how much to turn the wheel to turn into a driveway or onto a street.  You'll get there.  Patience.

As far as the ribs, what about something to keep your ribs still, when skiing.  The below is not what I'm thinking of, but it gives you an idea of the possibilities.  This picture may be for lumbar support, but who says you can't pull it up higher some?

Sliding toward my goals... 2Q==

Don't fret about the Half.  Just do what you can.  Walk/run.  Find a soul to run/walk with.  You'll be fine.  The resting seems to be enjoyed, except the Board meeting, but you WERE sitting.
