I want to be a part of it: NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Post  Natalie on Wed Jun 15, 2011 1:39 pm

Let's see... I'm already 128 miles behind my yearly mileage goal, I'm still 7 pounds too heavy for a PR, I tanked my Flying Pig training... BUT, I'm motivated. I'm so motivated, in fact, that I paid MONEY for a Hal Higdon training plan just so I could start getting daily emails from Training Peaks that didn't say "You have no workouts scheduled for today." I'm such a literalist, I guess I believed it! Hence, my being 128 miles behind in my training. Suspect Ok, ok... it is also possible that I bought the plan because I don't trust my own ability to count backward 18 weeks and arrive on the correct day for training to begin.

The plan I'm going with is the HH Advanced I training plan. I like it because it has a lot of daily running with variety. I've used Pfitzinger plans for three marathons. I had success once, but in general, those plans tend to wear me down. Let's face it: I'm 48 years old and I come to athletics late in life. Running long runs of 10 miles and more three times a week is just not for me. Plus, I get bored! I start thinking about my "to do" list by the time I'm halfway through. Not good for running focus.

The actual plan begins on July 4th, but I'm ready to start blogging now, because I'm in the preparation stages to begin training. I'm trying to lose weight, but it's hard. We just had Adam's graduation party on Sunday and we're drowning in leftovers! And they are delicious!

Here's the lowdown on this week's training so far:
Monday: 7 miles
Tues: 4 miles, 1 hour strength, 40 minutes aqua aerobics
Wed: Rest (Take my daughter to camp day). Plus, I'm pretty sore from the aqua aerobics. Wink

As an aside, I just want to say that I am so happy to be able to blog here. The really wonderful thing about these blogs, as opposed to Blogger or Facebook, is that I can be pretty certain that no one in my family is going to read what I post here. I can be open and honest about issues that are impacting my running without having my posts read by people who might take issue with what I write. I like that my blogs are anonymous, and yet not anonymous, in that you who read my blog can be supportive without getting your feelings hurt -- because I'm not posting about you. So, thank you to the administrators of the i-team for providing this space.

Good luck with the NYC prep. I used the HH Adv. plan for 2 of my marathons and both went well. Those pace runs are the toughest part of it. Each person interprets it differently but if it said "10 pace" on the schedule, I would do 10 miles at goal MP and I would try and make each one come in as close to the number as possible. I would actually warm up for a mile or so before the "10 pace" and not count that as part of the workout. I can't remember which week it is but when you do "10 pace" one day and 20 LSD the next day, you are good and ready for NYC!

Thanks Chris! It's the same for Int. II, which I did with success twice. I think it was pushing myself to do those 10 miles at 10:00 pace that helped me too. Without it, I just do all my runs at the same pace.

I'm glad to see that you are motivated and ready to run, Natalie. I did the Adv I program for my first marathon and enjoyed it, although in hindsight, I may have added a few miles to the midweek long run. I hope it works for you and leads to an enjoyable race in NY.

Good luck this training cycle. It will be nice to be able to read about your experiences and cheer you on from afar.

Natalie, I'm looking forward to reading about your training, and other things in life!

Funny, how most of us V-teamers started friending more of each other on Facebook after the TP changes. Lucky for me, I friended the Schueys and found the link to here. Now we can go back to this blogging format for our running stuff. Most of my Facebook friends are family or high school alums who arent' going to care how windy it was today for my 8 mile LSD!

Funny most of my friends are runners (Virtual) but still runners. My few family and friends don't even want to be friends with me on FB because they could care less about running. Then again, who cares about what there kids ate for dinner. Laughing

Good stuff, Natalie. I'm glad your blog found a home here. I know what you're saying about keeping running separate from facebook, and I think with the changes to TP, we all sort of turned to facebook more.

Advanced is a great program. I think what you said about needing more variety than Pfitz offers makes sense. Here we go!

You have to do what you have to do, and sometimes just tricking yourself (as in having an email telling you there is a workout to be done) is what it takes. I still turn my clock ahead by an embarrassing 25 minutes even though I KNOW it's 25 minutes ahead. Whatever.

New York...sounds perfect. Leftovers from graduation...I can only imagine if they're in your fridge how yummy they must be. Onward!

Natalie,

Plenty of time to build up the training and lose some weight. I am about 7 lbs over my race weight too. Hope that makes you feel better. Very Happy

I haven't been able to lose the 4 pounds I gained after my December marathon! EEEK! I feel your pain! Ideally I would like to be 4 pounds less than that so that makes 8!

In my case, it's usually not that I'm worried about anyone seeing something I'd rather them not see. It's more a case of them totally not being able to relate to a lot of the stuff that I write about on the forums, and specifically on my blog. I know that here, I can vent and go on and on about my injuries if I need to and I'll get nothing but support. Outside of this community, that's definitely not the case.

On another note, in case I didn't already tell you, I'm thrilled that you'll be in NY later this year. Although I won't be running NY, I'm sure we'll have a great pre-marathon gathering.

Ok, this might sound sacrilegious, but as a runner, even I don't like reading about people's running pursuits on Facebook! I like my facebook on the more irreverent side.

Well, that was exhausting!
I know I was supposed to rest today, but I did the Insanity "pure cardio" workout instead. It should be called "pure plyometrics." It was great!

That was some serious multi-quoting there Natalie.

Good luck with NY, I have that on my list to do someday.

As for facebook and running, it made me laugh because one of my friends was just commenting on how he doesn't care how many miles I ran each day. I'm using DailyMile and it was autoposting to facebook.

Crimminy! This blog isn't even 24 hours old, and it's already on the second page! That's a nice change.

Good luck on Advanced 1 this time, Natalie. I think there's a lot of benefit in trying something new when the old approach gets stale.

One other thing: 48 isn't old. It's experienced. cheers
