Running in this heat!

Post  charles.moman on Fri Jul 08, 2011 7:05 am

Yesterday I did my long run of the week - 12 miles. We started at 6:00 AM, so there was some light.
I had my wife wear my wrist band with a flashing light while riding her bike to help drivers see her on the country roads.
We went 6 miles out to a little place called Cortland - a little store/diner and a small school where I taught the last seven years of my 37 year career - and back. I was planning on and dreaming about getting one of their homemade cinnamon rolls there, but they were out. So I drank a cold Coke and ate a chocolate doughnut. I probably should have just had a gel and my water, but since I was there . .

It was 80 on the return trip and boy was I sweating like crazy.
I wear a Headsweats wicking hat and the sweat was literally dripping off the bill of the hat.
I drank all along the way so I would not dehydrate too bad. I was still wiped out at the end.
At noon it would have been crazy for me to be out in that heat.

Tonight I run at midnight in a 5K that benefits the Seymour High School Cross Country teams.
It will be fun running on the main streets and then finishing back at the high school on the tracks under the bright lights.
My 5K PR is 27:26 and I want to get under 27, but I am not sure that will happen tonight.
This morning I feel a lot better than I thought I would, so who knows.
It will be around 70 or less at midnight, so some serious sweating will still be going on - but not for long!

I can't wait until fall weather again. Approval

The heat can be a challenge sometimes, but as long as you plan for it, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Good luck in the midnight run!!

After the winter we had I refuse to complain about the heat this year. So far it's been brutal but I've been able to hit my workouts.

That's the attitude I tend to take, too. At least it's not icy and snowy and we can get outside (and our winter was nothing like IL's...) drink plenty and try to go as early as you can.

Heat acclimation takes ~2 weeks of 60-90 minute workouts every other day. In the heat/worst of it. I'm about halfway there... Still not easy yet.

It does take a while for the body to adjust to running in the heat. Good luck with your 5K PR quest tonight.

It gets better, but not exactly easy. I've now lived in the sauna of central Texas for 2 years, after having lived in cold weather climates most of my life, and while I think it's better now than when we first got here, the heat is still brutal.

What is this "fall" you speak of?

It is a wonderful thing here in Indiana!
I really love the 4 seasons - even winter.
My favorite is fall though.

I kind of agree with this. You do get used to it after a while but it still slows you down. Kind of like resistance training...

Re: Running in this heat!

Post  charles.moman on Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:21 pm

Well . . . actually I did TWO 5Ks. confused

I ran the Seymour Midnight 5K at . . . well . . midnight.
About 170 runners with a few walkers and it was quite warm and crazy high humidity.
After a mile I began to feel the 12 miles I ran on Thursday morning and decided to not kill myself.
It was fun running into the football stadium with all of the big lights on.
I had a few calling my name - some staff at my old schools and some former students.
Ran into one student on the course - she is in high school now and was just encouraging runners on a corner with her mom.
She declined a sweaty hug from her old music teacher!

I ended up doing a 32:14 which won my age group (55 - 59) - sort of.
They announced winners and I got my medal and gift certificate.
Then this morning I look at the official stats and I am # 2. Hmm . . .

I got to bed at 2:30 AM and got up at 6:00 AM and drove over to Nashville for a 5K that benefits the Brown County Cross Country team.
I had not planned to do it AT ALL, but last night the race director reminded us about it and I decided to give it a try.
There were maybe 10 of us that did both events. It was a combined event for 2 different running series.
My race director gave me another Blue Mile gift certificate for doing both - very nice.
He also apologized about the change in rank.
A guy came up to him after the announcements last night and said he should have been in my age group.
Hmm . . today the RD told me he was not too happy about that, but accepted it.
He said he clearly marked his form for the 50 - 54 age group, so we don't know what that was all about.
Maybe he recently turned 55 - who knows and I don't really care.

Anyway - I have not seen the official results but I believe I did it in 32:12 or so.
I thought I was much slower - I would not look at my Garmin - just ran my 10 something pace and finished.
I just don't handle the heat very well and could not push to get past 27, but I will before too long.
I would rather wait on that and not hurt myself and my marathon training plan.

One odd thing - a guy in my age group "won" his walker division - he might have been the only male walker anyway.
The thing is - he ran much of the race - I ran behind him for about a mile and then passed him.
Very rarely he walked and I assume he walked at the very end where he could be seen for sure.
He did not walk at a 10:35ish pace - oh brother.

A year ago I would have said it would be impossible for me to run ONE, much less TWO 5Ks in an 8 hour period.
But I did and it was fun. Today's was all grass and trails - a first for me. And I liked the softer surfaces.
One nap down and a swim coming up at our friend's house in a while.
Good times.

Congratulations on the double 5k finishes!! Oh, and the age group win or kinda win. Keep working at it and I am sure that you will soon be able to breeze past the 27 minute mark.

Probably something as short lived as 'Spring' around here.

I could do without fall or winter. Fall is so depressing, because everything is dying. Winter just sucks, because it is cold and snowy...

I would like to retract any statements or posts I may have made in the past implying or stating that you get used to running in the heat.

Yeah I'm done with it, too. It completely drains me of any energy and ambition I might otherwise be able to pretend to have.
