I hope the cold is better. I'm glad to see you didn't kill yourself with tough runs this weekend. Have a good relaxing week. You should be great on Sunday.

@Michael Enright wrote:Kenny - thought of you this morning as I was driving in. The signs are up on the highways warning of ramp and road closures on Saturday morning for the Hartford Marathon! That always gets my heart going a little, even though its not my race this year!

The forecast as of this morning looks promising. Don't worry about the hill at the end. Its no big deal. Looks like a lot more than it is on the elevation chart. As you come back over the Founder's Bridge and into downtown, you go up the "hill" of the bridge itself, but then you get a nice little downhill coming off the bridge. And then its a couple of short blocks of rise as you come away from the river, but you really aren't going to notice it much at all - they aligned it for the first time this way last year, and it was no big deal. The problem last year was that we were getting a wind out of the west, and as you run that final stretch before the turn into the park, there was a wind tunnel effect in the tall buildings downtown, so a decent headwind for the last half mile. Again, short-lived, and not a big deal unless you are 10 seconds off of PR pace!

I'll probably chime in again during the week, although my travel plans will make that less likely than usual. Hope the forecast stays nice. This morning they were predicting a high of 63 on Saturday on the local forecast...

Mike thanks for this info. Just checked weather and it might be very windy now 20mph South West wind. This could be quite problematic as 18-24 is headed south. If this is the case I will adjust my time as I can't see running through those types of winds. But a few more days for that to change.

@JohnP wrote:Good luck, Kenny. Your training has been so strong, consistent and with some really solid races.

Thank you John. I am ready to run my best.

@Seth Harrison wrote:I hope the cold is better. I'm glad to see you didn't kill yourself with tough runs this weekend. Have a good relaxing week. You should be great on Sunday.

Cold is non-issue as it is gone. Now just recovery runs keeping it easy peasy.

Thanks so much.

22 MPH winds are very tough. Is there a pace group you can run with so they can block the wind for you? Or is it a larger marathon which will hae plenty of people who can block it? Or since he's so tall, ask MVW to go pace you and run in front of you to take the brunt of the winds.

I think I am ditching Hartford going to run AC on Sunday. Weather is more favorable at this moment cooler less wind I can drive to the start line no need for hotel eat my own food etc. Still will be around 12mph winds but right now its a west wind where majority of the race is heading south then north out and back much more manageable I think vs. Hartford's now 17mph winds during the meat of the run all headwind.

If the forecast holds, you should switch. That's too much headwind!

I generally avoid spontaneity but an easy drive from your home, your own bed, own food, sounds good enough reason to me. Winds can make things tough but sometimes they don't really pick up until later in the day, too.

I avoid it as well with races. But right now AC still seems the better play as of 6am on Fri. Either race is a gamble right now so might as well gamble locally while saving $200+ bucks.

Because if you get a north or south wind by the boardwalk as it runs north and south you could be in for a hairy headwind for half the race.

Right now weather looks pretty much the same between both races only difference is the direction of the wind. Hartford still has that South wind and AC West which is a bit better.

Not feeling completely settled on my decision although AC is the choice now. I better get used to the idea and start thinking positively.

Agree.

Glad I wasn't able to run Hartford this year - running those late miles south into the wind sounds bad!

I'm assuming that AC is mostly out in the open, being along the ocean. That weather chart with all that sunshine looks a little scary. Not a perfect situation with the wind and all that sun, but it's probably better than Hartford.

Agree. I am going to see how I feel still shoot for 3:15 but if there is any doubt at start or as I progress I will reign it back in and look at goal B sub 3:20. If that is not in the cards I will run under LSD pace for remaining miles. If I can't go sub 3:20 then I will wait until Philly in 5 weeks. No point tearing myself.

At least that is tonight's plan.

Thanks everyone!

Just did my last easy 3 miles with 5 very short strides. Legs are full of energy like someone switched them out for a pair of Kenyans. HR was very low so I am ready and feeling a bit more confident regardless of winds.
