Everytime I finish a run over 8 miles my calve muscles will twitch or the rest of the day. I am assuming this is fairly normal, as it has been happening to me for as long as I can remember. Does anyone else have this happen to them? I attached a video to show you what I am talking about. It kinda looks like I have little animals moving around inside my leg...

I have no idea, but I am interested in what the cat in the bag video is all about scratch lol!

Sometimes I get the same thing after a hard workout, but it happens pretty rarely. Have you had problems with cramping? I just wonder if it is a water or electrolyte imbalance...

Todd has that problem too. I used to think it was dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It continues for the rest of the day even after he has rehydrated and drank gatorade or the like. It doesn't hurt but the feeling does bother him. I now wonder if it's a calcium imbalance. Think I'll have him drink milk or eat yogurt after a run and see what happens.

Think that one of the common reasons for twitching/spasms could be from dehydration or low levels of such minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium. Most people are deficient in magnesium, that is why I'm a big fan of epsom salt baths. I also started using an Epsom Lotion and then this weekend I found a new product by Ancient Mineral which makes a Magnesium oil which contains 560mg per tsp and a lotion which contains 185gm per tsp.

I use to have the same problem as you plus bad cramping in my feet and calfs at night while sleeping. Every since I have started doing more with the magnesium and also taking potassium pills along with my calcium the problems seem to go away. And that is also with training in this heat.

Heat and training hard can also be causes. The thing with magnesium is that it is hard for the body to absorb it orally. The best way for the body to absorb magnesium is by warm bath or topical application. Also with the oil and lotion I will use that after taking a epsom salt bath or warm shower because that helps opens the pores which allows for even more to be absorb.

Now I'm not an expert and I'm only speaking on what I have found to work for me and for when my muscles have been over worked. I do feel that this could be a starting point for you. I truly believe the issue would be with the minerals being low in your body especially with the longer runs.

Also excess caffeine has also been know to be associated with muscle twitching. Other things to look at could be improper stretching and running in intense heat.

You may be right with the whole chemical imbalance. I know that it is not from excess caffeine, nor dehydration. I do take a multivitamin, but like you said, it is tough to digest magnesium oraly. Like I had said earlier, this is something that has been happening as long as I can remember.

I have nothing constructive to add to this thread, just wanted to say that if I was drunk and you retitled the video to "parasitic insects hatch in leg," it would freak me the fuck out.

I twitch when I'm falling asleep, but this is not running related.

I wanted to stroke your legs until the creature started moving inside. What do you have living in there? affraid

I'm surprised you have never experienced cramping before. It's cause of overuse but my guess is that it is your weaker leg. Have you ever experienced injuries in your calf in the past? Even if you haven't, it's probably the weaker of the two legs just in general. You may not notice it but you may favor your other leg more. Maybe that leg is shorter than your other one? I favor my right and my left calf will twitch after hard workouts. I tore my calf muscle a couple years ago so it's even worse now. Not sure mine does that though...I'll have to video mine hahaha

Do some mild stretching on that leg only and that might help calm it but you will probably always experience it.

And you know I can't resist this one......

Do you have any other body parts that twitch that we need to know about? Twisted Evil

Guess what Chas...it happens to both of my calves, not just that leg. And it happens anytime I run distances of around 8 miles or more no matter how many miles I have (or not have) on my legs. I beginning to think that it may be more of what Schuey is talking about regarding minerals...

I have this exact thing after every long or hard workout. Before I even watched the video I knew exactly what you were referring to. I've always just thought it was blood pumping to my muscles to repair the damaged fibers. Yes, it's a bit of a twitch, but its not anything like a cramp.

Unless someone convinces me otherwise I'm not worried about it. Its not painful and doesn't lead to cramps. Survery says: Part of recovery!

Schuey, where did you get this magnesium lotion & oil from? A natural food store? Not sure if I could get it where I live but it's worth a shot. Also, do you or any others know where you can get larger amounts of epsom salts for cheaper prices? Our nearby drugstore carries an ok sized bag but it doesn't last all that long for the amount of epsom I should be putting in the bath for recovery.

We found it at a Apothecary place here in Chicago. But here is the link to Ancient Minerals website:

http://www.ancient-
minerals.com/products/magnesium-lotion/?gclid=CJCD3Kybn6oCFUPBKgodkEN45w

Hopefully you can find a place near by you that sells it or you can google it to find a place by you.

As for the Epsom Salt I still use the same old Epsom Salt that I have always bought. We get that from Costco here, which is a wholesale warehouse type of place. Which is great because we buy in bulk for very very cheap compared to what it cost in a store.
