Mantras Empty Mantras

Post  Stephanie Sun Aug 14, 2011 2:16 pm

Today's run was particularly challenging - I think the heat got to me and I expected it to be cooler than it was. Do you have particular mantras/phrases you say to yourself when the going gets tough during training or racing? I have my first race next weekend and I need to get mentally prepared. Thanks!

I have heard a quote (don't know who said it) that goes something like, "there will come a day when you will no longer be able to do this. Today is not that day." Good to tell myself when things get hard sometimes.

I hum the USC Trojan fight song. And I hate USC!

When things are inching toward struggle I repeatedly tell myself "flow like water."

In marathons, particularly after about mile 22 I have been known to talk to myself out loud. I find that words of encouragement "you are doing great!" "You got this!" "You are running great!" are a little (and I stress a very little) better than "Come on you piece of shit! Run!"

I talk to myself during tougher long runs and during marathons. I say "you look good! thank you, I feel good too, no I feel great!" Haha...I tell myself I'm tough, trust your training, you trained for this, can't wimp out now, get to hug my baby at the finish line...

Good one! Never heard that one before... although I don't think the chick thing is going to work for me. Wink

Nice! I like that sometimes we can talk to ourselves. Makes you dig deeper I can imagine.

Thanks everyone! Keep 'em coming if you have others!

Towards the end of the marathon when things are getting tough, I find myself repeating "You've trained all summer for this!!! No giving up!! Not today!!"

Yep I have used that one many of times in training runs and races.

Also use: regroup & conquer, focus & relax and the one that I use most of the time and has been the one that really gets me pumped and going again "Let's go, never forget the pain that dad went through when dying, it was far greater then any pain I will go through running any running event."

Racing Chicago last year... in the final 2 miles when I was wondering if I would fade... I heard 2 voices...

"You can do it, Daddy!"

"You're almost there!"

My kids.

Kids are great! Seeing my little 15 mo old clap for me at the end of my 50K is what led me to have a smile on just a few yards from the finish in my profile pic.

Slightly less degrading, I also (in the late stages of a long race) start talking to "the Beast." Not Satan, but the Beast inside that makes you want to just stop running, curl up, and sleep. I acknowledge him and start a really ridiculous dialog with him. And then everyone makes fun of me for it afterwards, but hey, I got my BQ Wink

I repeat the words, "calm and relax". I got the idea after reading some stuff about Desiree Davila and the things she tells herself.

Lately, however, on my long runs I've been known to repeat the words, "hot fries and beer". Haha!
