Lobo Runs For Sanctuary!

Post  Dave Wolfe on Wed Jun 15, 2011 8:49 pm

A NYC Marathon blog: I wasn't planning on running NY this year a tough winter full of non-running issues left me feeling blah. So although I had earned a slot in the race I let the sign-up deadline pass. Well I was looking at the 2012 calendar and realized the '12 marathon is on my birthday -- then I got to thinking and just felt compelled to run this year as well.

Charity slot here I come: after looking over the open charities I chose Sanctuary For Families. Sanctuary's mission to help people who are the victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking. Serious stuff -- I can't tell you how glad I am to have missed the entry deadline and how honored I am to be raising money for this organization!

Running: Recently took a couple of weeks off because my left shin was just trashed but I'm now running pain free. Just logging some miles and hoping to work up to @40 miles a week before starting a 12 week program based substantially on the "Boston Bound" schedule with some elements from Joe Rubio's "Strong Like Bull" schedule thrown in. Let the games begin.

Dave, it's great to see you're running NY too. Running for a charity is very inspirational, especially when you find one you can truly believe in. Good luck!

Very commendable running for a charity. Look forward to watching your progress and hopefully seeing you at a I-Team Dinner in NYC.

Thanks guys.

Well so far this week I've been consistent if light on the miles. I'll probably take tomorrow off:
Mon -- Rest
Tues -- 4
Weds -- 5
Thurs -- 4
Fri -- Rest

It's gonna be a process to get in shape for this.

That sounds like an incredibly worthy case, Dave. They'll appreciate whatever you can do for them.

Good luck on the training cycle. Just work the program, and you'll get there in good shape.

Dave great to hear that you will be running NY this year. Maybe one of these days I get around to running it. The last time I was in New York it was seeing a Dead show, wow time flies by.

I also think it is great the cause you are running for. Domestic abuse and Human Trafficking is a huge problem and something I just have never understood. It is so sad that some get enjoyment out of abusing another human! Maybe someday we will all learn how to love and respect one another and make our world even a better place to live.

Best of luck on this training cycle!

Mark -- I've never been this out of shape this late in the year -- going to be interesting.

Schuey -- I'd love to see what the "The Bull" could do in NY. A fun course . . . And you're right about this cause -- serious stuff. I'm just kind of glad I missed the sign up so I have this opportunity to help out in a small way.

Ran an easy 7 miles this morning on a relatively flat route (only a few hills). I'll get out again tomorrow.

6.2 miles to close out the week. So if I counted right that's 26.2 miles for the week.
I looked at my daily mile entries and I put in no real miles from Dec- March so it's going to be interesting . . . might well be that this marathon is about participation.

Two intermediate goals:
1) to crack 200 lbs. before August 1 (currently at 205)
2) to able to easily run for 2 hours within the next 8 weeks.

Well at least you are being honest with yourself and know that the miles are not there to race the marathon. Participating is not a bad thing. I have done that while running with Lisa and I have to admit I had just as much fun as when I race. Just remember keep building those miles and keeping everything balanced.

I like your short term goals. Good luck on reaching them Dave.

Dave, like SHuey, I think you have realistic short term goals here. With the injuries you've had, it is good to take it back slowly here. From all I hear, NYC is a participation marathon so you should be fine.

Schuey -- definitely need an honest assessment of where I am. I think we run for all sorts of reasons and a PR race is not always in the cards.

Thanks John -- you're right about NYC being a participation race -- on the other hand while not a particularly fast course I think I can run a very strong race one year.

Gimme Shelter

Post  Dave Wolfe on Sat Jun 25, 2011 9:10 pm

A fair week of running so far this week. I was feeling pretty good until last night when my left shin was feeling kinda "funky" slight pain but it was gone by this morning. I bought Addias Super Novas and yesterday was the first run in them. They stress the leg differently than the Nikes I run in and so I hope the pain is just a result of this different stress.

Monday -- Rest
Tues -- 3.25 miles
Weds -- Slept in but meant to run at lunch and didn't get the chance.
Thurs -- 6 miles easy.
Fri -- 6 miles easy -- although a did some surges in miles 3-4.
Sat -- 3 miles very slow followed by some family day hiking at Bear Mountain. Not sure the hiking adds anything but we had a nice day.

Looking to run 90 mins tomorrow or @8+ miles. (hopefully). I look at the running log shows that some of the runs are getting slightly longer and the pace is getting slightly faster. With 7/8 weeks of base-building to go I can afford to be patient.

A solid 8 miles along the river to end the week. Pretty pleased with the way base-building is going if I can just stay consistent.

27 miles for the week but several of the runs are getting longer.
