Haven't listened yet, but just reading the description... Shit.

2 Weeks in the Running/Racing Life of Michael Wardian
135 mile race, indoor marathon, treadmill marathon + 2X 5K... Michael Wardian MichaelWardianTreadmillWorldRecordAttempt

Michael Wardian isn't like most runners - he inspires us and reminds us that we can all do more... Married with two children and a full time job, none of that stops Wardian from reaching his running goals. After getting a Marathon Trials qualifying time in June (Wardian ran a PR 2:17:49 at Grandma's Marathon); Wardian set some lofty goals for the second half of July.

1) Badwater Ultramarathon (135 miles July 11/12). Wardian tackled the Badwater Ultra, a 135 mile course through the desert starting at 282 feet below sea-level and ending at 8360 feet, crossing two mountain ranges for a 19,000 foot gain. In Wardian's first attempt to run more than 100 miles, he was quite successful, finishing third in 26hrs 22mins 01sec. Wardian told us that his legs felt like slabs of tenderized meat (this from a vegetarian!).

2) Grant-Pierce Indoor Marathon (26.2miles, July 16). Most might rest after Badwater, but the community center where Wardian ran his one-off indoor marathon/world record in 2010 wanted him back, and he agreed. Four days after Badwater, Wardian ran 209 laps to win the 2nd annual Grant-Pierce Indoor Marathon in 3:15:19.

3) Wardian vs. the Baltimore Orioles Marathon (July 22). In conjunction with a Baltimore Orioles Game and Baltimore Marathon promotion, Wardian agreed to run a marathon on a treadmill - the challenge was not to race another runner, but to finish the treadmill marathon in less time than the game. Wardian told us that the organizers asked him to start off slowly - to make it close - but by the bottom of the sixth inning, Wardian was only at mile 14 and worried. The treadmill had a maximum speed of 6 minute miles, so Wardian maxed it out for the last 12 miles and finished his marathon in 2:44:41, beating the ball game.

4/5) BRR 5K, Crystal City Twilighter 5K (July 23) Because Wardian was already in Baltimore, of course he'd race a 5K the morning after a marathon, and after a short night's sleep (after the late finishing marathon), Wardian raced a 5K to finish second in 16:20 then drove home to run an afternoon 5K in nearby Crystal City in 16:24.... Not part of this story, but timely, after a week off from racing (Wardian needed some time with the family), he went out to win the San Francisco Marathon at the end of July...

I'm a huge fan as he runs almost every significant DC-area race and so I see him all the time out there. Really nice guy. Quiet. You would think some of stuff he does with the frequent racing and events like the treadmill vs. the Orioles make him similar to a Public Relations machine like Dean K. but I don't get that vibe from Wardian at all. Much more humble and low key about his talent and accomplishments. He was a college lacrosse player who got into running late. Works full-time as a shipping broker and fits in all his racing and training around his work and family time. He's not going to run Ryan Hall or Ritz kind of road marathon times but he's still a supertalent OTQ marathon guy and an even higher level of elite ultra guy (100K National Champ) who is very inspiring for those of us who try and balance work/family/running.

He seems like someone who takes himself really seriously too. Sort of like this during Badwater...

For more on Wardian and this year's Badwater race, read this piece from the Washington Post.

From Wikipedia - he's 6' and 145 lbs. Wow.

Guys like this remind me that the glass ceiling, even in ultra-running, is very, very far away.
