The Long Run
Well with so many of us already and many getting ready to start their marathon training cycle, I thought that I would post this article from Running Times:
http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=14547
I have found myself reading this article again by McMillan. Even though I feel I have a good grasp on how and what type of long runs I like to do the one thing that I do like is that he gives you a guideline for how many of these different long runs to do within a 16 week training cycle.
For me personally I would have to disagree with him on the fact of only doing 2 MP runs within a training cycle. I do agree about doing 4 with surges(which for me is basically doing a long fartlek)
Check the article out, I would like to hear whatever one else thinks. Also I would like to get others opinion on the long run and what you feel works for you and how you go about this type of run in your training program.
Happy Friday!!

Re: The Long Run
It is a great article and I planned on incorporating some of his long run techniques in my upcoming Marathon Cycle. I think the surges would be something very beneficial to add as that is about the only component I am missing! Thanks for sharing again as it gives me so ideas to tweak my schedule.
And I see nothing wrong with (2) long runs @ MP if your incorporating the other stuff. I think it is a good combination he suggests. Basically he has you doing 12 long runs at some type of fast pace incorporated into it. That is pretty healthy running!
But of course it really comes down to what works for you!

Re: The Long Run
Schuey - I think he's only recommending 2 MP runs as long runs, isn't he? I'm sure there are other MP runs that aren't as long. He's also got the "mixed pace" runs which could average MP (MP-15/MP+15). Either way, this is something I may have to incorporate into my training when I start getting "serious" again. Thanks for posting!

Yes Surges are great to have in the long run, I'm surprised you have done that type of LR yet. You are the king of trying things out. As for the 2 LR's @ MP I see your point and point well taken.

Good points you make Mike, see that is why I ask for others input. It is always great to see how other take running articles and it helps give me a different point of view to take into account. Yes I think that you could benefit greatly by some of the different LR's he talks about in your next race specific race training cycle.

I have not done surges as he suggests reminds me of fartlek which I don't like. I enjoy pace runs, progression runs, track work. tempo runs least favorite and surges just does not resonate with me. However, I probably should do them just because of how much benefit they can give me. Something about doing what you don't like. Sort of like Tempo runs FCR I don't like them yet they are probably one of the most beneficial workouts.
