Over-reach in training, now what? Empty Over-reach in training, now what?

Post  Alex Kubacki Mon Oct 10, 2011 2:24 pm

Two weeks ago I did my goal marathon. In three weeks I'm doing my two day race, a half on Saturday and full on Sunday. I've been following Phitz's 5-week multiple marathon plan. The mistake I made was his plan is if you didn't fully trash yourself in the first one. I did. So now after the past 10 days of some GA runs and few MP and sub-MP miles (and the MP & sub-MP aren't even on his plan) my legs are dead. It wasn't a lot of miles over the past two weeks, just the intensity that did me in.

I just did two days of recovery runs after a 10M GA Saturday and my legs are still shot. I plan to take tomorrow off completely. Over these next three weeks should I just forget about any intense running or do some and just reduce the miles in the plan? My goal for the race is just to finish without resorting to crawling by the end.

Thanks.

Just go out and run easy. You're not shooting for any time goals so there's really no point in doing any hard running until you're completely recovered from all your races. You're at a pretty high risk of injury running hard now as well.

I agree with Jim. If your legs are tired, then your focus should be on rest and recovery. The only thing any high intensity training is going to do is make things worse.

If you are not feeling better by the second week which you seem not be then I would continue with easy running nothing more maybe 1-2 weeks out from race weekend incorporate some strides into end of run just to mix it up. If you can hit your LSD runs of 11 and 16 great if not keep under double digits.

You don't need to do much to maintain your endurance at this point. You're not going to lose the ability to complete a marathon in just 5 weeks. You will, however, lose your LEGS' ability to do that if you keep pushing. When things don't go the way you want, ease up.
