Term Limits?

I can't think of anything else that it would be. Question Question Question Question Question Question Question Question Question Question

-30-

Well, I went out to run, but the legs weren't feeling it.  one of those days and I'm probably out of ketosis.

Today's Covid update as of 9:42 a.m. CT
#10 - Washington - 6,395
#12 - Texas           5,253
#31 - Oregon            826

In Texas:
Harris County - 955
Dallas County - 831
Travis County - 351 (Austin)

I think Texas will pass Washington on Saturday.
Edit at 5:17, the governor said Texas has 800 Covid patients in hospitals out of a total of 19,000 available.  He seems to think we have more than enough to cover everyone that needs a bed.  Time will tell.

Homeward Bound...?

Yeah, pretty obnoxious.  At least it was calm and quiet enough that I got some sleep last night.

Haley and I had planned to head out to the course today to run it as our long runs (I'd do the 14mi leg, she'd do 18mi), but I decided I want to give the calf another easy day before starting to push any mileage again.  So just an easy 5.8mi for me today.  Felt fine.  Hamstrings very tight from kettlebell swings.

The upside of this little setback and the time its freed up is that I've had time to step back from chasing mileage (I don't even have an A-race until November) and really look at my approach to 2018 on a holistic level.  I wanted to get away from being all-runner-all-the-time after Stone Mill, but just 2 months into the year, I'm already back there.  So, the modified approach is as follows:

- ~45-50mpw average until June.*
- ONE workout (at tempo or faster) per week.  Strides/hill sprints/moderate finishes not included.
- Bike commute as often as possible ("cross-training").
- 2-3x/week full body (push/pull/core) strength training.
- *As soon as weather permits, get out to the mountains as much as possible for car camping + long run/hikes.  This could easily bump weekly mileage to 60+.

In the more immediate future, remaining spring races are as follows:

3/11 - DCRR Fort Hunt 10k.  Pending the upcoming week, the plan is to run to the start (13mi), run a progressive tempo (MP--->10k) for the race, then cool down to 20mi total for the day.

Either
3/17 - Elizabeth Furnace 50k.  Semi-technical with lots of vert.  I'm #10 on the waitlist and have been told by multiple people "you'll get in," but at this point, I'm pretty sure I won't.  I've only moved 2-3 slots in the last week.
or
3/18 - DCRR Burke Lake 12k.  Don't know if I'd actually race this or what.  I'm supposed to have a long run this weekend, so maybe another long + fast finish.

4/8 - Cherry Blossom 10M.  This was going to be my goal race of the spring, shooting for something ~6:20 pace, but I'm not sure how much work my calf will take in the next month.  I think 6:30-6:35 pace is already possible given current fitness, so we'll see how the month goes.

After Cherry Blossom, we're looking at a couple weeks of body/mental reset before starting to build mileage for 100 training.  May is Bike Month, according to Sacramento, and I still try to put in miles for the group I rode with out there, so it'll probably be a bike heavy month, as well.

THAT'S the takeaway!  Regarding the event, you had no prior history of heart troubles, so how could you recognize it?

I think you're more attuned to what to lookout for now, more than ever.  What you do in training, you duplicate in the event, except maybe faster.  So, if you're not experiencing anything during training, why would you expect it during a race?  Only a rare event, like a tire and wheel coming off a truck, would strike.

Talk with the cardiologist.  See if, generally, what happens in training would happen in a race.  Plus utilize your knowledge to ease your mind.  Keep a journal (you're probably doing that).

Thanks to both of you.  I know that I'm making progress and doing well...but I still worry at times.  It's one thing to think it and another thing to live it.

Maybe "nullum timorem habeo" should be my new running mantra!

I didn't realize I was on the top 10 board Doug...huge accomplishment.  Shocked

Good news...after going back up to 54 my RHR dropped right back to 50 and then 49 the last two days.

I have a couple things I need to get caught up in the office and at home but then I need to sit down and tackle finalizing my marathon training plan.  I've got it roughed in but not finalized.  It's only 21 weeks away. What a Face

AND I have a couple of fun/interesting things that I'm considering.  Trying to figure out if I can fit them in without compromising marathon training to much.  I'm trying to keep some fun in training without totally giving up on competitive goals.  It's all about compromise...

Update coming...
