Sleep and Training
I can't remember where, but I read somewhere that it is suggested that you should get an extra minute of sleep (during the week) for each mile that you have to run for that week. So, for example, if you have 40 miles scheduled for the week, then you should get an extra 40 minutes of sleep (than normal) during that week.
What is your take on the above philosophy? How much sleep do you normally get during a training cycle?

Re: Sleep and Training
As for me, I try to get a good night's rest prior to my long runs. How much is that, it varies, but I would like to think that I perform better on 8 hours of sleep. I can definitely feel it during a run, no matter how long or short, when I do not get enough sleep.

I would just listen to your body. If you're falling asleep or struggling to stay awake during the day then you probably need more. I have barely slept for the last 5 yrs but that is how it goes. Coffee is good stuff if you can handle it. Don't most professional runners nap?

Re: Sleep and Training
I wish I could sleep 8 hours, it's been a while, I guess the result of getting older and still drinking a few caffeine pops a day (though this is less than coffee). If you find yourself tired, as Julie suggests, you should try to get more. The one adage I read that definitely is true for me, is that it's the sleep before midnight that counts. It's too hard to sleep in.

I don't sleep much.
Ran my second-best time in the marathon on about an hour (maybe two) of sleep!

Running with the Kennyans summarizes Kennyans' training plan as 3 words: Run, Eat, Sleep.
How good do you want to be as a runner, Nick?

Haha...I think that I get a good amount of sleep. I just found the article interesting and was wondering what everyone thinks of the idea. You know, trying to stimulate some conversation.

Jerry doesn't understand what "stimulate some conversation" means. To him stimulate would be having a diet coke.

Heh. You know how they say in acts of extreme endurance sports, that you reach a point to where you just can't go any farther... but find to your everlasting surprise that you have opened some untapped well deep within you and you find yourself carrying on stronger than you ever imagined possible?
Yeah, parenthood can be just like that sometimes. Especially at 3 a.m.

I have a hard time feeling too sorry for the dads on here but I think my family has had a pretty lopsided sleep deprivation with me being the one up at all hours and nursing and pumping and my husband sleeping through anything. So I will try to overlook how my family works and imagine some of you dads are also tired. Although you're not up peeing 5x/night during pregnancy.
