I have a 305.Nick Morris wrote:I still like my 305Mark B wrote:Sheese... you guys are making me feel like Fred Flintstone with my 305.
It's so old, it counts the cadence for all four limbs! <rimshot>
The cost of the new ones, even a new 305 on Amazon is $329 , scared me to see what Garmin could do for me.
I was so chincy that when my 305 cratered last month, that I called Garmin and they sold me a refurb for either $80 or $100, when I returned the dead one.

Yeah,
We have no problem dropping 400+ on these, but we moan about race fees! It's all part of the same demographic issue. We need more poor people in this sport. I'm not a yuppie, not a yuppie, not a yuppie, I swear!
I'm going to assume those are shots at me so my response is threefold:
1) Sure. I'm a yuppie. I'm a young urban professional. Better yet I'm hopefully a young, upwardly-mobile urban professional. I like nice things. Including $400 running watches and BMWs.
2) And yes, I will continue to bitch about race fees when CG charges prices like $145-$180 for a half-marathon. A half marathon!
3) It's simple mathematics. Is the purchase frivolous if I use it everyday for a few years? Or is it better to spend $165 to race a half?
Not sure I understand the point of your digs.

Re: Garmin 620! - Who Wants to Buy my 610??
I don't think that was a dig at anyone. Just the simple fact that marathon runners in general tend to be professional types with some disposable income and therefore the companies that make the products that make our lives easier tend to charge a little more than they might because they know the money is available to be spent.Ben Z wrote:

The more I think about this watch, the more I think that I may break down and buy it this winter...

Re: Garmin 620! - Who Wants to Buy my 610??
I think I win the prize for the lowest / un-fanciest model; the 210. I had a 305, loved it, but it died, and for some reason, decided on the 210 and have regretted it since. I don't like it at all. It's difficult to charge, really finicky with pace for at least the first 2 minutes of my runs, loses signal all the time and is often completely inaccurate (like, I do not run at 4:33 pace, ever, but it says I do sometimes, or what feels like about 10:00 pace shows up as 13:00 pace for a few minutes until it catches up), and you can't customize the display screen. And it's just temperamental in general. I wish it would just die so I can justify buying a nicer one.

Re: Garmin 620! - Who Wants to Buy my 610??
Nope, on backorder and my 610 has been acting up. Sort of like your car when you decide to sell it!
Back to what Ben and others said above, I have had my 610 for 3.5 yrs (it is the 2nd one or refurbed 1st one as it went back to Garmin after 3 months for an issue) and I had my 305 for 5 yrs. Since I run rougly 5-6 days per week 45-48 wks per yr, I think I got my monies worth for both of them. As for the $165 half marathon and the $225 marathon, well, I'm willing to pay for Boston or new York, but I certainly would not have paid that for the RnR half in Cleveland and I don't think that anyone else will either. Since it was the inaugural year, it was offered up to us locals pretty cheap (as low as $30 which is what I paid). I know it was expensive by the end and it did not sell out. The issue is that Akron is the week before, it has a very successful 11 yr history, and it is a very reasonable price.
And I'll admit it, at this point in my life, I'm even more of a yuppie than I was at Ben's age.

Anybody got their watch yet?
Some retailers are showing "in stock", but I'm not so sure.

Oh'Yeah. My 610 is white, too!
Is Jerry not confident enough to sport a white watch?
I thought you were a studly sub-3 marathoner.
