How does this thing calculate the HR%? The numbers it spits out for me make no sense whatsoever.

I think it uses Heart Rate Reserve instead of straight Heart Rate percentage of max. Thats why you need to provide your resting heart rate. Here's an article from Pfitzinger about heart rate reserve.

I thought it was going to be something like that but it didn't explicitly say that anywhere so I wasn't sure. Good news is that based on this table:
I was right where I need to be on my last 2 runs. 71% of HRR on my long run and 64% on my recovery run yesterday. That is assuming, of course, my Max and Resting HR numbers are accurate.
