Pain on top of Foot Empty Pain on top of Foot

Post  Jim Lentz Tue Jul 08, 2014 10:28 am

Saturday I noticed a slight pain on the top of my left foot. I noticed it shortly after I Started a 12 mile run and it felt like the left side of the shoe tongue was folded over. I didn't think much of it and ran 9 miles yesterday and noticed the pain again. At around 5 miles I stopped and checked the shoe and didn't find any problem with the tongue. When I got home I found a red lump a little bigger than a quarter. I put ice on it for a short while, but it still hurts some today. Any idea what it might be?

Is it a hot spot, where the shoe is rubbing? If so, try putting glide on the area before running.

There doesn't seem to be any chafing. If it feels a bit better tomorrow for my next scheduled run I will try it with the shoelaces being looser.

A lady showed me to lace bypassing hot spot. Then I realized I could lace anyway I wanted. There is really no rule.

Another +1.  I get this sometimes, especially from one particular pair of shoes (which I have since discarded), and if I do, it hurts for days. So, I then lace around the problem area which helps a ton.

I had some pain on the top of my foot/feet some time ago. It became bad enough that I went to visit my sports med doc and he thought there was no need for an x-ray and prescribed nsaids and the pain ended up going away.

Thanks Everyone for your ideas! It was a problem with the tightness of the laces apparently. I ran 10 miles with them very loose and not even a little pain. Tim, unfortunately I can't take NSAIDs as I am on a blood thinner. Tylenol is the only thing I am allowed and it doesn't help for things like this.

Look up Morton's neuroma. I had this last year, it went away.

I looked it up and since I had a lump it doesn't seem to fit. Also mine came up in a few days and after a couple of times icing the area and then running with the shoes loose it is completely gone. I have never had any kind of injury go away so fast. Thanks for the info!

Glad to hear that it has subsided.

Ironically, I just had a similar thing happen to my foot this weekend, too. I must have had the laces too tight, so I loosened them and everything felt much better. Weird.
