A drive to the Columbia River to pick up some canned applesauce we had ordered...and a stop on the way home to look at a horse that Marty is interested in.

The Columbia River cans applesauce?

The area around the Columbia River is famous for it's fruit orchards.  We located a small family owned business that prepares canned peaches, pears, applesauce, cherries etc.  It's expensive but is much higher quality than the canned fruit available in stores.  I used to can fruit myself but the cost of the fruit, sugar, and lids makes it unaffordable when compared to the fruit they offer.  We pre-order and buy in large enough quantities to last a year.  It's a lovely 2 hour drive from our home.  We eat fresh fruit when it's available but like to have canned fruit in the pantry as a backup.  And I have a family recipe that calls for canned fruit...lovely memories of Auntie Vi serving this at family gatherings.  Marty has memories of eating applesauce and a graham cracker with his Grandma.

Home canned fruit is not comparable to store-canned in those aluminum/steel cans! My kids have been working on last fall's pears these last few weeks.
